A singular facet

I hung out, just for a while
She was in a small group
I just showed up, no biggie
Informal, in pj's, she made tea


I wondered what she'd say
Was I intruding maybe?
But she introduced me
Like an art scene celebrity


"Do you know Trixsie?"
"You simply must know Trixsie"
"She's a genius, SO amazing!"
Unexpected lyrically waxing


But she continued to gush
If I'd had time I'd have been shy
But before I could say shucks
She said the words:


"I am so glad that you are part of my life!"
And my poor, tired heart
Beat like the dawn, an epoch's start
My chest on fire I surrendered the past

I understood at the end, we had become
Accidental pets

I was fresh and you were new
So many faces in a carnivàle
You watched me, I watched you
Things led to things (as things often do)

We danced to the tune
My paws, your keys, your paws, my frets
Played each other at a game we didn't know
Accidental pets

This time you be master
A foolish dream of ownership that
You'd call with arms spread wide
You'd let me keep company at your side

But in my desire to serve
An impossible goal I set
But I impressed you too much
My accidental pet
