Do bear in mind that over the last 17 hours since I posted, I spent roughly eight sleeping and then another ten or so at work - I run on GMT, or UK time (if you prefer), so I'm on a different clock to the rest of you. Aside from that, I have a full-time job, and can't stay up late hours to play on the internet as much as I'd like. I also have other hobbies and interests too, so I'm not going to be constantly checking up on the thread and posting - I do like to do other things as well.
Anyway, I'm getting a post up now that should deal with the immediate medical emergency, and allow us to get on with the fight (and thus the storyline).

Ray, any soldier in any infantry regiment will be trained to use an assault rifle, as part of their standard boot-camp training. Combat engineers also fight and train as infantry, beyond their specialization as engineers. Look at pictures of combat engineers in the field on-line, they'll all have rifles.
While Wikipedia isn't the best of resources always, the page on there about combat engineers says as much -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_engineerUsually, a combat engineer is also trained as an infantryman, and combat engineering units often have a secondary role fighting as infantry.
Also, you have an FN-2000 on your character sheet
