well what got me into metal was a mate of mine, he was into nu metal and a lot of melodic death metal.... my first metal band was disturbed , im really into lighter alternative 'metal' bands like system of a down, avenged sevenfold and seether slipknot is another favorite,,,,, and in flames!! and mayhem!!! omg i could go on but i dont wanna overdo it.. smell you folks later 

omfg lol isnt "Mayhem" the band where the lead singer blew his brains out and they actually used it as an album cover?

I think his name was Dead (Per Yngve Ohlin),  that cover was used in their live album "The Dawn of the Black Hearts", I also heard that the band members made necklaces from pieces of his skull.

Mhm. Dead was convinced he was possessed by a demon so he slit his wrists before blwoing his own head off. Euronymous (The guitarist) found him and yes, made necklaces out of his skull fragments. I believe Faust of various bands like Dissection and Emperor, Morgan Håkansson of Marduk have a necklace. They did apparently make a stew out of his brain, but noone knows if it's true.

Anyway, myself, being the cute fennec that I am, adores the more extreme metal. Nile, Wormed, Cattle Decapitation, Chthonic and Infecting The Swarm, to name a few.

But softer bands too like Polysics, Torche and video game music too

Jon from Dissection blew his brains out after apparently completing everything he set out to do and Nattramn of Silencer (though this is still rumor) was institutionalized after the release of 'Death...Pierce Me', broke out and hacked a 6 year old girl to death with an axe while begging the police to kill him, but recent rumors claim it was his brother. He was also said to have had pig's feet sewn onto his stumps after cutting off his hands, but that was untrue.

I've recently started getting into doom metal myself. If anyone has any good band suggestions to help me along that'd be great.

Speaking of Nattram, does that mean crow/raven or something? I was just listening to Ereb Altor and they have an album called that ^^'

Try Amorphis. They're not as hardcore as most, but their songs are beautiful in themselves. I really love some of their stuff.

The main Doom Metal band I listen a lot too is Ennui, the only thing is I can't understand their lyrics or even read them (I can't read Georgian).
