Is furry changing? Is it all about the adult things?
« on: September 21, 2014, 03:39:23 PM »
So basically I have been in the furry fandom since 2003. When I first joined everything was new. But now it feels old hat. It feels like I cant take 2 steps without seeing adult artwork or writing of some kind. Yes I do like that stuff but like I would like to be able to go onto a furry site and not just see that. Or I would like to be able to read a story without sex in the first chapter. I would also Like to be able to read a 40,000 word or more story that is well written. It has been years since I read a well written furry story.

What are your thoughts on if the furry fandom is changing or what?

I Really care less about adult artwork remember rule 34:if it exists there IS adult artwork of it...

Yes can you recommend any sites with "clean" well drawn artwork or "clean" well written stories of at least 40,000 words?

I don't think it's changing at all, I think more people are just noticing how much more adult stuff there is versus clean .w.
Honestly whenever I wanna just browse clean stuff I turn on SFW node on FA x3

I don't think its changing much, I recall back when I was a kid and just started to find furry things online. I think that would be about the same time as the OP. On my end the over all ratio of adult to non adult oriented art is about the same, or if anything I think it may have shifted more to the non-adult side. When furry things started to circulate on the internet at first, you know back in the baud modem days, the people online to talk about and do furry art were older. There were not as many pre/teens online so the artwork, stories, and comics tended to reflect that.

Now in today's modern culture where seemingly everyone has internet as a child, the average age I think is declining. With that comes issues two fold.
*1 : people are more... randy from ages like 15-25 and then it naturally declines. These are also in my experience the age ranges of most furs I meet IRL. I meet very few grey muzzles and very few young ones. So it stands to reason that anything that can be remotely sexualized, will be by this age group. See anime, videogames, commercials, clothing, books etc all aimed at this age group.

*2  : But the fandom still has a great deal of art that is safe for work, lots of it is even what I would call fine or high arts, the Blotch Duo comes to mind with their amazing inking and watercolours. it all depends on what you are looking for and where about you are seeking it.

I have artwork from back in the mid 90's that's pretty hard core, and some that's softer and more suitable for all ages. Just the same as now when you go to an artistic sharing site like deviant art, you can find artwork aimed at all the age groups.

Well, we are in the culture where people openly talk about and use apps like Tinder that are meant to find sex partners (even if no one will call it what it is when selling it). I don't think it's just the furry fandom, if anything. We have a kink book as a bestseller, too.

I tend to struggle to find writing I like, too, but I don't think it's all about the porn. I think a lot of people are just too concerned with the number of watches, faves, and comments, and don't take much time to work on individual pieces. More time revising, less time on the front page and less visibility. It's more of an attention grab or side income than a serious creative endeavor.

I roleplay fantasy, sci-fi, and adventure! I do not roleplay anything sexual, romantic, or relationship-oriented. I'm in a serious, non-roleplay relationship and there are minors here.

Im 25 atm and when I was 14ish I discovered the porn side of furry. The first fic I read was a lion king porno. I have revisited it in recent years and I now see it as badly written. At the time it was new and such and I didnt know well written things like that.

Missyvixen mind if I ask how old you are and how long you been in the fandom?

I am a very young fox, only 23, however I was exposed at a very early age maybe 11 or 12 when i found adult furry art online. I had a hand me down computer with a modem and was more or less never restrained on the interwebs. I matured sexually rather early, but relationships and emotionally it took me some years to actually catch up to the desires. I even remember watching anthro cartoons as a kid (that were slightly over sexualized for the target age group) and remember feeling funny in a good way before i even had a computer.

My attraction to the more carnal side of the fandom has not gone away, I just matured and realized there was a bit more to it than just the adult side, and that I can indulge many more desires in the literature and art than just a little self indulgence on the side. I still enjoy that, but I dont call it the prime motivating factor : its a happy bonus. The real reason I stay is the comeradery and general niceness of most of the furs : there is a lack of judgement, prejudices, and a general friendly air to most of us. A lot of us are slightly less/more the the social norm and thus come from some sort of background that leads us to be more accepting of one another. Or at least that is the Fandom i want to see, through my rosey shades ^^

I think the adult things tend to be spread around more, since a lot of non-furries think that the furry fandom is strictly porn and nothing else.  :/

I don't know if it's changing necessarily, cuz I wasn't involved with the fandom until recently, but I think that anyone can provide some change to the fandom if they want to. And that means that if we want to change the fandom so there's fewer sexual things, we can start by putting more non-sexual things into the fandom ourselves. ^_^

Ehhh. I'm just gonna throw my two cents up in here if anyone doesn't mind. Feel free to use constructive criticism on what I have to say.

For me I believe the fun came first, then in came those who turned a portion of the community into what is normally portrayed in the media. I was first exposed to the clean side of the community, I got into forums, saw nice art.

It kinda depends on where you go online in terms of seeing the smut compared to the fun-loving community and it does vary from one fur to another.

I personally don't mind the art, but its not exactly my cup of tea.

I just turn on SFW  X3

i don't think the fandom is changing into being more adult-focused I just think it's expanding like fandoms sometimes tend to do, and that you just notice it more once you get deeper into the fandom, and in many furs cases old enough to turn off SFW...

I haven't read much of the other posts so sorry if I'm just repeating stuff...

Honestly, I would say that nothing hasn't really changed; There's always been adult stuff and there's always been a lot of non-adult stuff just like it is now. When I joined the fandom over 5 years ago, there was just as much adult stuff I'd say.

See, the difference however is that it perhaps wasn't as widespread or easily available which is often the case for most things now very popular on the internet.
