I have red/green color blindness also for some shades of blue and purple, but not as bad as red and green. In preschool I would stare at the names of crayons so that nobody would think I was stupid...

Not easily telling the difference between blue and purple is often from red/green colorblindness, actually. Because purple is a blend of blue and red, the red light isn't registered as well as it should, making the purple appear blue depending on where on the red/blue scale the shade of purple is.
It doesn't mean you can't see red/green entirely, just in varying degrees depending on how severe it is. It's possible for one to have some red/green colorblindness and not even realize it at first because it's so minor.

A previous mate of mine has colorblindness, and red is still one of his favorite colors.
He said rainbows look like ugly yellowish marks in the sky for him. :P
