Writing a Book, need advice
« on: March 23, 2015, 05:46:05 PM »
I never used to like reading, but lately writing has become a hobby for me. And lately I've been writing a book about my fursona Benny and all his friends. ...But I want some advice.

My book is meant to be 12 chapters long, but... by the end of the seventh chapter it's almost 200 pages long, which from what I noticed is pretty long for a book, especially since the book's targeted mostly at teens, young adults... well pretty much anyone can read it. I'm considering separating it into two books because it might be cheaper and it may be a wiser choice if I did.

Also, the book is about anthropomorphic monsters, and I know people who absolutely will NOT read, play or watch anything in it where the goodguy characters are anything other than human. Not to mention the negative stigma against furries. I'm wondering how I can advertise the book to appeal to a broad audience.

One the whole pages thing, I've seen books that are aimed at teens and young adults that are like 600 pages long, so i don't think you have a problem there. As for the whole furry thing, anthropomorphic characters have been a thing in literature for a long time so I don't think that would really affect it that much either to be honest.

But not so much in literature that adults read as well. Look at Harry Potter, it got as successful as it was because both kids AND adults read it.

First, I think you're really on the right track! Page count doesn't matter so much, I think. And trust me, a lot of books that adults read are actually pretty long. Just take a look at Stephen King!

Second, if you have a Tumblr account (or even if you don't), I'd suggest checking out @legit-writing-tips. She's crazy helpful, and you can ask her anything for advice, so long as she hasn't covered it already.  :)

Day to night, Dark to light,          In your mind, walk through time
Flow the sands of time...             Back to better days...
Let the years, like the gears        Memories, like a dream,
Of a clock, unwind...                   Wash tears away...

Like a star in the sky,                 Cast away your old face,
Darkness can't reach you,           Full of gloom and spite...
Light the night, Joy is light           With this mask, I'll ask to
'Til the new dawn...                     Borrow your light...

Another thing I forgot to mention: Don't people tend to write shorter books when they start out, and start working harder once they start becoming popular?
