The whole fandom feels like a cult sometimes.
Especially on FA where some people seem to take the whole thing a little too seriously.

There's nothing much wrong with FA (most of the time and except for the things that are wrong)
It's mostly just that when jumping around looking at people's profiles at random you sometimes find things that really makes you wonder if there's anything else to their life than the fandom.
It's horrifying, sad and interesting at the same time.

Usually, members of a cult are satisfied with their hierarchy.

Clearly, if all the "Furries are superior to normal people"-journals are any indication.


Then, there's the thing with not associating with people who are not part of the cult.
"I only ever make friends with other furries. I hate normal people."


And, above all, the constant trying to convert more people to join the cult:
"Oh, you like Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, and werewolves? And you can appreciate art of anthropomorphic animals in general? You're clearly one of us. A closet-furry. See the light!"

Tho I can totally see where people are coming from when they compare the fandom with a cult xP


It's only when things go from being a hobby/interest into an all-consuming obsession that I think people should take a step back and think about what they're doing with their lives.
For as long as it's just something that makes someone happy and doesn't hurt anyone (themselves included) I've got no issues whatsoever.
Would be kinda hypocritical of me otherwise, seeing as I've gone the full mile with attending conventions and fursuiting and all that.

I never joined FA.  It seemed like it would be too crowded.  I like small groups.

I don't really experience it as being "crowded" as it's pretty clunky to try and be social there imo. Tho I can't really saiy I've tried to be, as I mostly just use it to try and keep my commissioned arts uploaded and easily-accessible, as well as to follow artists I like.
I feel like the best thing to compare it to is a bunch of people together in a room, but everyone is just staring down into their smartphones and maybe interacting a little here and there every once in a while.
But that's just my opinion and stuff.
