Kazbek playfully shoved his brother’s shoulder before he leaned in closer and started to speak to the small group as they sat around the fire,
“Well, if it’s a story you want… A long, long time before the war began, before the bombs fell from the sky and forced the survivors deep below the surface. There was a Mausoleum built in Red Square, it housed the remains of one Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, otherwise known as Lenin, first leader of the Soviet Union, hero of the masses and saviour of the proletariat, Blah, blah, blah….” The canine laughed as he recalled listening to the propaganda from the Red Line stations.
“Anyway, the mausoleum housed many artifacts, including a journal kept by the man himself… Obviously, this is a very, very important artifact to the communists in the Red Line, just like the holy grail was to the Christians. But they were never able to get to it due to the lethal levels of radiation surrounding the building. Every single team they sent up over the past 20 years disappeared or died before they found the journal. Although… a few weeks ago they sent a large team up to the surface with radiation suits and by some miracle they made it into the mausoleum alive and retrieved the journal from the building.
But as our triumphant heroes escaped with their precious little book, they emerged to find themselves surrounded by a Reich stalker patrol… You see the Nazis had heard about the expedition from their spies in the Red Line and wanted to keep the book in order to destroy it. A fierce battle between the most elite, battle hardened warriors of the Communist and Nazi stations soon followed…”
Kazbek paused as he picked up a dead rat from the floor by it’s tail and tossed it into the flames.
“They fought like feral animals when they ran out of ammunition, beating each other with their empty rifles, stabbing with bayonets and even strangling each other with their bare hands. Apparently, one Commie bit the tail off one of the Nazis with his own teeth as they fought on the ice!
Anyway, all but 3 soldiers died. The lone surviving Communist took the journal and ran off with it towards the Red line… but he never made it home… We know that somewhere along the way he hid the journal in an old bunker and died before it could be retrieved”
“What bullshit! How do you know all of this if you weren’t there?” on of the unnamed guards called from behind the barricade
“The 2 surviving Nazis followed him but were later captured by one of our Patrols from Polis. And after a little…Persuasion” Kazbek grinned as he threw two fake punches into the air in front of him like a boxer. “They told us everything we wanted to know… the rest of it you can guess, Polis command sends us down to the red line to gather intel and find the bunker that holds the journal. As you can see, that plan didn’t work out very well.”
Kazbek took a breath and reclined back against the sandbags.
“Any other questions?”
