Night Witches by Sabaton

You ever wanted history lessons in music? Sabaton has lots of that. I knew exactly what this song was about when I saw it, and I have to thank one of my new friends for introducing me to them.

Now then, the Night Witches were also known as Russian Night Bomber Regiment 588. They flew Polikarpov Po-2 aircraft - the world's most widely produced biplane. It could carry six bombs at its highest number, with those six bombs being fifty kilograms each (one-hundred-and-ten pounds). However, it had a few alternate bomb loads including two fifties and two hundreds, as well as a smaller load for longer trips of four fifties. The plane was ungodly slow, and this served as a benefit as well as a detriment, since it increased travel time as well as made it more vulnerable to anti-aircraft gunners if spotted, but enemy planes would have an impossible time getting on and staying on its tail both due to return fire and just how slow it was. The tail gunner on the plane also had one of the highest rate of fire of any gun of its time in its 7.62 millimeter machine gun.

Now, the Night Witches had something special about them. Not a single male pilot or tail gunner was among them. The group was exclusively female, and they were great at what they did. Among the most decorated of Russian Bomber regiments, they also returned Hitler's psychological warfare tactics. In knowing that these bases were being destroyed by women, as well as knowing they were losing troops and armor to them, was demoralizing due to the mindsets of many at the time. Plus, with the raids being done at night, all the ground crews could do was guess where the planes would come from before they were devastated by bombing runs.

These women were instrumental in weakening the Germans in WWII, and each two woman crew flew over one thousand sorties on average, meaning they fought just as hard for their country as any of the other soviet forces.
