Found in forums, yet still lost.
« on: August 20, 2015, 12:20:58 PM »
Hello everyone. I'm a new person to this forum, or any furry forum for that matter...

I signed up to mainly get help with 1 thing: Finding and learning about my fursona. Although I intend to stay around in this forum for hopefully quite some time, I need help with my fursona. With that being said, let me tell you a little about myself.

I'm quite a chill/relaxed person, that loves to do a little bit of everything. I've found I can pretty much get along with anyone. I like to find a common middle-ground of interest with someone, then use that to build and expand friendships from there.

As for things furry, what can I say?.... I have to first say I do not judge. (This goes for things not furry as well.) Even though I may not have or wear a fur-suit, I don't judge those that do nor shun them away from me. I am however a really big fan of the artwork, and creativity throughout the furry community. If anything else, I believe it will be the creative side of the community that I will connect with the most.

As for my fursona, the biggest part of my problem is figuring out what it will be animal wise. There are a lot of animals I like, but not 1 single one that I find myself gravitating towards. I'm also finding myself stuck with what I'm sure is a common complaint: "I want something original." Don't get me wrong, I love me some dog/cat/wolf/fox furries. I'm sure this is one thing I can get over, but I'm still holding out hope there is something special I can find. Another problem I'm having is with so many animals out there, how will I know I chose correctly? The last thing I've got to factor into my fursona's creation is my personality. I want to find some kind of creature/animal that can portray my personality a little bit.

With that stuff said I'm way open to everyone's suggestions, and hope to hear from a lot of you. If any of you have some links that may help me in my dilemmas at the moment, please feel free to share them with me some way or another. I'm sure some of you will be seeing me around this site quite a bit.

If you can't choose just one, perhaps you can go hybrid. Take it from me, having a hybrid fursona is great! I might be a bit biased though :)

In any event, welcome to the forums! Hopefully I will be seeing you around.

I've thought about some kind of hybrid, but I haven't settled on what to mix either...

Some things I would like to mix/choose from are:

Owl
Cat
Fox

Edit: Holy hell this post came out long. I apologize for the text wall!

----

When it comes to creating a hybrid or, more accurately, a chimera, I find it is best to choose from the features and personality of X animal that you feel best suits you.

For my fellow, Nemael, 'lion/big cat' was the overall base due to my love of felines, connection to them and their perceived personality. Bat wings combined with a birds for superior flight capabilities and quick turns as well as my love of flight and desire to become a pilot. Long cheek furring that could be braided similar to a lynx for aesthetic as well as a very small nod to my Comanche ancestry. Exotic eyes (heterochromia; one purple, other pink, my two favorite colors, black sclera and pupil and a white sunburst as seen in my avatar) as they are considered the 'windows to the soul' and I wanted them to be seen as exactly that; especially since my eyes are considered extremely expressive. I also wanted them to match my own eyes as they have a very notable golden sunburst/flower around my pupil which bleed into blue-green/hazel. Train track scarring on the upper arms which hint at my personal history. Broken chain tattoo/brand and SEE-064 brand/tattoo because of both my book series pertaining to him as well as further personal history.

Alien-esque ears (a combination of reptile and bat) to give him that overall unique look and silhouette, so he could stand out against other characters with a head based around a lion. Also a design I have always loved since I first drew it. A mane that is loosely a male lions while also being made unique in look to make him stand out further and to hint at his original sex. Bird legs with a dew claw for my love of birds as well as functional for numerous situations, ascribing to my own abilities. Key necklace that looks exactly like the one I always wear since I am obsessed with them. The one I wear is actually what started my collection as well as one I have never seen anywhere else. A unique tail design based around a scorpion, iguana and a reaper scythe for defense; a way to protect himself as I needed to when I was younger. Transmale for obvious reasons. Thigh pouch containing journals, pens and a pocket watch, all of which are important to me as a writer and more personal history. Gems inserted in the chest, clavicle, and held by the wings and tail from my love of crystals and precious stones, as well as lore reasoning (holds and produces magical power constantly from his own energy as well as taking it from the Shift). Then his coloration, white with black seal-tip markings and opalescent wings to suit how people perceive me when they first meet me and then how they come to see me. Same applies to his body type and constant 'pissed' expression, as people are either terrified of me at first glance (I am extremely tall with broad shoulders) or seek me out for help on some extremely embarrassing things. He is tall as well to suit the aforementioned.

Thus when it comes to designing your 'sona, whether it is a hybrid, chimera or pure X animal, I find it is best to follow your own history and likes. It immediately makes them more endearing, especially if you fit in aspects of who you want to be. This can be done in one of numerous ways.

Also, a tip: Do not always rely on the physical look of your 'sona being what makes them unique or different from the rest. For the longest time, I used this fellow and variations on his appearance: http://sta.sh/22cnegxh2159 as well as this guy: http://sta.sh/229cfdos1zh6 since I saw virtually nothing that looked remotely like them. However, even with that going for them as well as their history, I never became too attached. I had to force myself to go back to them whenever I made new designs because they were not as original.

Fortunately, when I worked from the aforementioned aspects backwards into the animals that fit those features, I arrived at Nemael: http://sta.sh/24gu2yz42rs He is certainly unique in profile, silhouette and overall appearance while still being a cohesive entity. I even went so far as to build up his history, what magic he uses, how it came into being, the Shift, and other such things before I even decided on one animal feature. He was born from these notes I wrote, as opposed to the others who came from features I loved and THEN had information tailored to fit them.

I have also used a bunch of video games, novels and movies to help me further. I have a massive obsession with BioWare and their Dragon Age games, thus I used them as an inspiration springboard. This was both to help me in furthering Nemael's universe as well as uncovering what exactly I loved about them and why. It may be time consuming to figure it all out, let alone actually nail down the animal(s) that best suit these facets, but I found it was worth it in the end. Even if it did take over fourteen years. ._.

I can attest to how monumental an undertaking it can be to find a species you think suits you well enough. There are so many animals I absolutely adore but I don't feel are a good fit for me, and then there are animals I do think fit, but not consistently enough to make a fursona out of. I feel like I'm a very different person from who I was when I first interacted with furries a decade ago, and it took me literal years to settle on something enough to be able to use it as a representative species. I guess I could call my current self a hybrid, though it's mostly a physical features thing and not necessarily personality.

There are all kinds of reasons fursonas come to be, and I wish you luck on your quest for self-discovery.

Fake edit: The post above mine is very insightful and very true, as I've gone through some of the same things, especially creating appearances and becoming disenchanted with them due to focusing on the wrong things. (Also I'm obsessed with Dragon Age too)

I've always been a cat person, and like their personalities a lot. I find them to be really complex. I love how cat's cat have such a nonchalant demeanor, and have it 180 in seconds. Going from "not paying attention" and relaxed, then out of nowhere on the attack. But it's their chill nature I gravitate to more.

I've always like the owl for it's symbolism with knowledge, and it being a creature of the night. I have a hard time trying to imagine it incorporated into my fursona somehow with looks.

I've always like the sleek look to foxes. Agility and playfulness is a key factor as well. I don't know if I'd go with the traditional red/orange and white for colors though. I have a corgi (Her name is Ein of course! XP) and love her colors, but I don't know if I see it ending up on my fursona.

Thank you for the kind words Aldebar! And I love to meet other people who are obsessed with DA. Almost no one I know likes it, let alone as much as I do.

Back on topic: When it comes to combining some of the features, what are your favorite physical aspects from an owl or, better yet, what about them do you associate their wisdom with? Is it their large eyes? Their markings? The asymmetrical ears that allows them to catch sound within 0.5 degrees of its origin? For your critter, you could do something as simple as the markings of, say, a barn owl or maybe the feather tufts of the horned owl, going in so far as to turn them into pseudo ears. Or maybe have the beak and general face of an owl, but have the lower jaw be that of the fox (or maybe the upper with a sharp keratin bit on the bottom!) to represent that, and maybe even their wings.

There is a ton of things you could incorporate into one creature from the smallest things, even if it just happens to be the size of their eyes! Play around with the anatomy and give everything a swing. See how you feel about it and whether it makes sense to you to have it that way, rather than if it would be sensible anatomically. I have fallen to that demon far too many times since I always tried to keep my creatures realistically rendered for flight capability, which would ruin their overall feel at times.

Same. I mean, I work with a bunch of fellow geeks and some of them are familiar, but it's not the 'buying books of lore because it's just that interesting' kind of familiar.

To also contribute to the topic at least a little bit, though, I feel like I should note that it's perfectly fine to be a single-species purebreed and not necessarily distinct when it comes to appearance since it's things like personality and actions that make a person truly unique, buuut I also can't deny how fun it is to play mad scientist and splice critters together.
