The purpose of this thread is to give everyone a look at the complications associated with a given gender. Contribute in any way you will. Societal topics are prefered, but any informative, non-corrosive additions are also welcomed.

Since I am male, I will start off with:
Athleticism is valued over intelligence.
Sensitivity is considered weakness.
Everybody seems to be competing for the more dominating public image.

Some female things based on things I've experienced myself, but it wouldn't surprise me if others have had similar-ish experiences as well. Please note that I'm -not- putting everyone in the same basket here or trying to imply that everyone is like this or that this is the absolute truth of the universe. It's just some personal experiences.

"The bigger they are the prettier/better you are"

If you don't wear make-up, shave your legs and/or wear the right kinds of clothes, you're just a lazy slob and actually quite ugly too.

It's IMPOSSIBLE for boys and girls to be "just friends". Pretty much every time I go hang out with any of my irl male friends, the first question I get when I come back home is "Had fun with your boyfriend? What did you guys do?"
Sure, he's a boy and he's my friend, but we're -not- dating, and that means he's -not- my boyfriend.

Your interests are to be limited to fashion, gossip, pop-music, facebook, instagram and other things like that. Trying to talk about "guy-things" like video games with guys is more often than not going to make them give you funny looks before they pass you off as a poser or wannabe gamer. It doesn't matter that you've got proof your love for video games is real, or that you actually even beat some of them in several games as well, you're still never going to be as good as them. Oh, and don't you DARE be a female playing games online. Just. Don't.

The looks you get when people realize you're not interested in (holding) their baby or not interested in having kids yourself are hilarious. HOW DARE YOU!? YOU'RE A GIRL AND IT'S YOUR DUTY IN LIFE TO BECOME A MOTHER! I WANT GRANDCHILDREN!!!!

There are all these "ideals" that are near-impossible to live up to without driving yourself to the point of anorexia.

Beauty is valued over intelligence way too often.

Hopefully at least one or two of these fit into the thread >->'

As a guy I'm expected to be a number of things

I'm expected to be strong both physically and emotionally

Expected to be a player who's been with hundreds of girls and on the constant search for new partners or have at least one girlfriend at all times

It is assumed by an increasing number of people that I'm by default a mysoginist and a pig

I'm expected to put brawn before brains and love sport of all kinds and to be proficient in at least 3

It's imprinted in my mind that only buff and manly men get the girls

I'm only supposed to wear vests and shorts or no top at all

I'm not allowed to like anything pink, floral or anything that can be considered cute

Anything where I diverge from the standard means I'm automatically gay

And if a girl has been with "too many" guys she's a slut.
This is one of the more interesting differences in my opinion.

I think the funniest one is that all the cooking is expected to be done and done the best by women but the majority of chefs are men

Urk. Haven't we had enough of these threads lately?

We've had a straight thread, an asexual thread, a gender thread and a LGBT thread.

All we are concerned about is the problems with being one or the other. All anyone seems to do these days is focus on what's bad about their role in life, they talk about how it's bad being gay, how it's bad being straight, how it's bad being asexual, male, female, trans, cis, all we seem to focus on these days is what's bad, how we're in some way disadvantaged.

You know what? **censor** that, I don't care, I've had enough of that I'm sick of it. I'm not gonna talk about what's bad with being a male, or gay, or a ginger, I don't care.

I'm gonna talk about what's good about being a person and even though I have the flu, and 3 tests coming up next week and because of my flu I couldn't present on something I've been working really hard towards, I still managed to spend the day with some cool people I hadn't really known before. I still managed to taste the awesomeness of sweet chocolate from a kit kat bar, I still managed to listen to some awesome music and I get to hug my wonderful dog.

We always focus on what's bad, and I know for some people there isn't much else to focus on, but I know for me I can focus on what's good and that's what I like.

I like being gay because I've met some awesome friends through the community, I've learned a lot about life and I'm happy to be accepting of myself
I like being ginger cause it means I won't go to hell for being gay cause I have no soul :P
I like being a man cause I don't have to wear makeup and care as much about my looks. Even though I may have to care more about my masculinity, I don't, because I choose not to.

We keep trying to find what's wrong with life, can we once look for what's right?

Anoni

I am sorry to see that I've offended you in this way. I didn't intend for this to become another instance of a thread which divided the community or became filled with meaningless complaint. My intent was to give each person an opportunity to discuss how the perception of a person is affected by the simplest things. I would hope to learn from what people contribute here, and give a better sense of what people go through. Perhaps even help to give me a better concept of how to express a true feeling of equality for all people. That is why I post in so many threads like this, the threads that were made to divide but ended as so much more. I want to get past all the social boundaries that society has taught me, and this is one way to do that.

I value information and civil discussion, not mindless complaints. We both know what happens then.

To conclude, I hope this might clear some things up, and while I respect your opinion of this specific thread, I would like to see this continue for the sake of education and the lessons I might learn.

It's not a mindless complaint. It's just lately all I've seen from these posts are talking about what makes people different and how these differences should be really noticed and such. While I think it's good to do that for a few things, I feel it can be more damaging in excess, too much of anything can cause problems. We've had three threads on the differences of sexuality and now two threads on the difference of gender and almost every single one of these threads has led to arguments, debates, anger, drama, complaining, reports, moderation, etc. And peoples solution is to simply make more. It just tires me out and I'm sick of it.

Alright though, this is your thread and I don't want to derail the thread so I'm gonna stop posting about it and if you truly feel my response was simply a meaningless complaint, then there's not much I can do. This is your thread Hollow and you can treat it the way you want, I hope I didn't disturb it in any way that made you feel terrible but I felt I had to say my piece. I'm not gonna be participating in this thread anymore.

I didn't mean that your comment was meaningless. I understand what you are saying, and I have seen what past thread have turned into. I would like to make this an exception to the rule of how most similar threads end up.
