You can also count in Ingress, like if you are on a convention or just furmeet, you can team up and make city-wide shaped fields (like paw shaped or something related, if portals configuration allows for that) to make it more memorable or inform other agents or I don't know...

But as shaped fields are common on Ingress events, people on other themed events might not be aware that this game exists

Do team up if possible. It's more fun that way. I just realized how much fun I'm missing by playing alone.

It's either love (get addicted) or hate kind of thing, but once you get into it, there's no coming back.

You also possibly might have just missed rookie-oriented event(s) in your area. IngressFS happens on every First Saturday of a month, but you need to check in what cities it is organized at a specific month.
