WIP stands for Work-in-progress.
It's usually a sketch that show the pose and stuff like that.
Most artists tend to show them to make sure they've got the right idea of what the commissioner want and to give them an opportunity to request any changes they might want.
That's the moment to do so, since afterwards it gets more annoying to change stuff.
And there's a special circle in hell for those who request changes on the "here's your finished commission!"-stage, I've been told.
So don't do that. (Not that I think you do, this is just a general tip for anyone who happen to stumble upon this.)




And here's an example of a base you could use to make a temporary reference. (There are plenty of them around and they're easy to find, so that's just an example.)
I assume you want to be a male anthro canine/german shepherd. The body shape and stuff might not match up perfectly, but you'll either have to try edit that yourself or add notes describing how it -should- be.


And, I could try and help you if you'd like.
I can do basic colouring and some slight editing.
Nothing too fancy, but it's helped me bring both my cheetah and my crocodinolizard to life.

Artist show them for a reason, and usually won't crawl through screen to murder you if you request changes.

EVEN THOUGH THEY SOMETIMES REALLY WANT TO. ( Don't worry about me though, just mention on time what changes you want when you get the WIP(s) and I'm good.)
Gosh, I had a guy who didn't respond to several messages in years, then he finally responds and says: Could you do this and this still for me, kek?

^^ The artists I went to didn't show me any WIP... But yeah, I figured that telling him it was all wrong was kind off a dick move, by the time it was finished!

Now, You don't by any chance have any advice for when someone doesn't respond to a PM in wich you've asked them something? :\

In my opinion, especially if it's paid artwork or at least above a certain price, you can (and probably should) request a WIP anyways
So you know for future reference!

I would send another PM and say the same thing, but starting off you didn't get a response.
If it requires a deadline, then give them a deadline or otherwise you'll go ahead and assume whatever option is most benefitting to you.

Yeah Ventus, I've read TONS of stories of hopeless customers, so I'm not surprised >->'
It's really sad that some people seem to think that artists just snap their fingers and the image is there with little to no effort




Also worth mentioning is that even at the WIP/sketch stage, changes should be reasonable.
Completely going "Ohaidere I have a new idea pls start over from scratch" or otherwise asking for really huge changes that almost equals to starting over might come with a slight fee to make up for the time spent going back and forth like that.
And that's perfectly within the artist's rights since it's essentially a waste of time for them to have to start over. So always be sure about what you want and as clear as possible to avoid miscommunications.
Sure, sometimes things just happen, but often it's possible to avoid all that.


Also, I think most artists prefer descriptions that are short and to the point over looooong drawn-out essays.
There -are- exceptions, but for the most part it's best to stick to bullet point lists or a few sentences.


And yes, some artist might actually specifically state in their Terms of Service that they won't show WIPs unless they're requested.
This is because having to show WIPs slow down the whole process a bit, but it's still perfectly ok to ask for them!

I had someone who saw the WIP, wanted a small change, then another small change... and another...
And then I said: STAHP. Just tell me all in one go now. After this last time I'll just complete it, this is usually not my process.
And they stopped, understood. Since then they commissioned me again, so we're on good terms, I suppose

And yeah, it's always good to have a ToS set up. I have one, needs to be updated though...

I once accidentally upset an artist with poor wording (it sounded like I was asking for free art while I was actually asking for open slots.)
I did get a scolding and became kinda sad too (because harsh accusations. Sadly I totally understood where she was coming from since that also seem to be a constant plague for artists. People hounding free requests despite all the big red bold "no requests" plastered everywhere) but I apologized and explained things and things turned out just awesome in the end. http://tatiilange.tumblr.com/post/91799637812/commission-for-zaryte-colored-and-uncolored






And yup, PMs tend to pile up.
I sometimes feel awful because I sometimes get overwhelmed and end up answering at a snail's pace and then by the time I get to someone the whole conversation gets awkward because noone remember what we were talking about and then I feel bad because I feel like I come off as ignoring people which I don't but that's what it seems like and then I definitely feel awful and *splodes*

Well, bold move doesn't have to mean appropriate move...I guess that's why you're saying used to know?

But, yeah, if you look at the actual breed of the GSD, bravery is all them! German shepherds were initially bread for fighting wolves... And, they were succesfull in beating the physically superior wolf because, unlike wolves, GSD's are not affraid of injury. At the point where a wolf would run, a GSD would simply keep fighting untill the job is done.

As weird as it sounds, that's actually a quality wich is really prominent in me...

And, Believe me, it DOES NOT lend me well during martial arts trainings!

Nah, I actually didn't mind the movie at all :P Sure, I did feel it did go quite far overboard with trying to portray how awfully miserable everything was all the time,
and a lot of the things just felt really weird  for other reasons (like that final battle scene), but other than that, it's perfectly within the realm of stuff I consider to be at the very least acceptable.
Yeah, I'm weird like that.
