When I was making a trip in between germany and france with my mom those years back from Munich to Colmar and from Colmar to Freiburg and back to Munich, I did notice the rather steep difference of personality and attitude in between the french and germans when crossing the lines! Where as in a small german, lets say a wine shop, the shop keeper would always come to ask if he/she could help and would try to assist in any ways to help the customer! Even if they wouldn't probably understand you, they'd still try their best!
Meanwhile when in Colmar, the owner of a similar shop was a completely different story. Once entered inside and started looking around for a fine french bottle of wine and pointed it on the top shelf and asked if we could inspect it. The shopkeeper would go to get the bottle, bring it on the counter and hit the price tag on the register with the most poisonous tone and expression ever, as if to just to have me and my mother out from the shop as fast as possible. All spoken in french and this happened also in a nearby grocery store as well, where all we got were totally angry and despising stares from the locals who'd refuse to talk neither english or german!
Left a sour taste in my mouth the whole experience and despite the whole city of Colmar being so beautiful, the people there just didnt seem to like having tourists of any kind who didnt speak their language! Oh, well the Freiburg was just pure awesome sauce afterwards that easily fixed that whole fiasco of a trip to Colmar!
