We've got tonnes of deer, wild horse, and "Scottish highlanders" here. All from the tiny national park at the coast, where I live...

Only the deer are a bit wary, and tend to run away. But you can litterally just walk upto the wild horses, and scottish highlanders to pet them... Always fun to see "Frgn casuals" coming into the park, taking pictures, and being scared to bits by them. Something I like just walk up to them and pet them right infront of their faces. It never fails to completely blow their minds! :P

And, never been in the south of Finland. Only the north, in the region of Oulu, and Kajaani... Too bad I didn't get to see too much due to a few, sigh, circumstances... But, I'd like to go back there, Maybe more north, next winter, and do it right this time!

I live in rather close by to Cheza in the capital of Helsinki! Aye, in the far north they have kaamos and the midnight sun to deal with to make a life living there a bit more different than in the middle, or western europe!  :P

You've been to Finland earlier, Challenger?  :)

Myep!

Been there in the middle of winter! I got to stay with a girls family in one of those awesome wooden houses, where they lived, in the middle of nowhere! Also stayed in Kajaani a few days.

I really loved it! The cold, the houses and stuff, all the forest and snow I could possibly wish for!

Only a shame said girl rather insisted on me staying inside the house with her. Because "it was dangerous to go outside alone". (Kidding me?) Also a shame that said girl was unbelievably lazy, not wanting to actually go out with me, either...

And yet, she had such a hard time figuring out why I didn't want a relationship with her... -.-

Soo, yeah, I didn't really get to enjoy my time there as much as I could've... Wich is why I want to go back, next winter, and not let anyone stop me from going where I damn please...

Although... I could always swing south a few days as well, if it's interesting...

It takes 2 flights to get there anyway... Might as well!

Oh, damn... Sounded like a rather unpleasant way to experience the winter of Finland!  :S

My mother's gentleman friend is from Oulu and that place is indeed very noice during the snowy seasons! Wanted to go there myself as well one day, along even norther to witness the true beauty of the wilderness!

To experience Finland truly, one must really go out and have a walk in the wilds to understand what it has to offer!

Hopefully the next visit if you ever come here again would be more pleasant one, matey!

I'm scertainly planning on that happening!

If I'm not being too worried on getting the hell TCON'd out of me, and ending up running trough said forests like a dog who's been kept in a kennel for over a year...

As much fun as that sounds to me, getting lost and dying of hunger/thirst/HT seems to kinda outweigh the pros...

Having only 38Km^2 of forest, although being rather dissapointing, does mean that you can simply never get lost, because, even if it wasn't littered with trails, and hardened roads, it would only take me a handfull of hours to completely cross it. Soo I've never really had to worry about getting lost...

....You mean you haven't heard about the polar bears?! :O
Jk.. That one never gets old... >_> In fact, it probably died 50 years ago.

I've been in the north a few times.
To pan gold and hunt for amethysts.
And to find and feed the Siberian jays out in the centre of the middle of nowhere, in true Disney princess fashion.
Would love to go again sometime.

We used to go with mom and have it as a small family tradition thing, but she's terrified of bears and stuff so we couldn't really go wandering anywhere. Mostly we just went to touristy places.
Which is cool too, even if I love those really old untouched forests.

We also went with my whole class in 8th grade.
10km long hikes every day for a week.
Was fun, since we actually went into the wild.

As for my amethyst hunt, I found this beauty:
Spoiler for Hidden:

It's a shaman's stone. It contains quartz of three different types: Amethyst, smoky quartz and clear quartz.

Also have this test tube with some gold flakes in it.

And this picture taken by my mom, of a polar bear.

Mom and I were planning on going again this year, but since I started school and her vacation started late this year, we had to skip it.
Maybe next year...

Gnight, you!

@Cz

Those are some nice looking rocks. Are they just lying around, or do you have to dig for them?

And, wow, schools organising stuff like that shure sounds like an awesome idea... If only we had any forest left in the Netherlands, hardihar... I did hear of something like that before. Where they just taught 8 year old children how to use a knife, and start fires, stuff like that. That's how you get your kids to grow up big and strong. (Secretely a little bit envious I didn't grow up there myself...)

I do hope that next year works out for you two!

And, I'm not worried about bears. I'll just climb a tree!  ᕙ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )ᕗ

(Disclaimer: JK...)

Had to dig a little. Like, think "kid in a sandbox"-level of deep. So not really deep at all. Just enough to push some dirt aside. The kind of stone I found is a bit uncommon tho.
Most stones are either just amethyst, smoky quartz or clear quartz.

Yup, the rocks can be found on the surface too, as the mine where I found it lies on top of a mountain that's had it's top ground to pebbles by the inland ice during the last ice age. Pretty dang cool.
That's also the reason why there are no high mountain peaks here.
The ice shaved them all down.

And the mine itself is lovely too.
They mostly dig by hand, and want the place to be sustainable for as long as possible.
At this rate, they count there'll be rocks to be found for another 500 years or so.

It was a pretty cool trip! Tho I don't think all schools do them.
I dunno tho.
All I know is that I went to a really small school with only ~150-250 students at most (with 40 students in my class, and that was considered "a lot"  ), so it wasn't too hard to arrange transportation, accomodation and for only a few teachers and volunteer parents to run the whole show.

40 students a lot? I had 21 in elementary school, and that was considered a lot...  0_o

Although, I guess Finnish kiddos are a lot easier to take care of. I mean, with all those creepy tv shows I guess they're not really affraid to talk about what bears would really do to a little kid if they found one skulking around, soo they'd stick a little closer to teacher, rather than the fairytale stuff that we got taught...

Although, in Dutchies defense, we don't have bears/wolves to worry about... Although it is said they're kinda coming back to the north/eastern corner of the Netherlands, from Germany, theres simply nothing in our "forests" that could kill a kid...

I really hope they're coming back... Wolves are awesome, and I'd really like to see one someday!

In grades 1-6 we were 15, and in 7-8 we were 40 split up in two parallell groups of 20.
That too was considered a lot. When I was in third grade, only ONE kid started in first grade, and the numbers never really recovered.
So that school ended up closing.
Ended up moving in 8-9th grade and ended up in a school that had parallell groups going from A to F  for my age groups, and had  several hundred students in total. It felt really weird.

Oh, and I doubt -any- bear would dare approach the loud noisy crowd that tend to be a school class on a trip xP Same with all other predators.
