Yeah, it's more of a visual thing... But that's how I learned it. It also helps with flans I do, like in the drum part for "Dez Moines" by Devil Wears Prada there's a tom riff that keeps you occupied on snare and 8" tom (I think that's the size) that in the middle you have to flan out the floor tom like twice, but instead of stressing your muscles you just use that technique, cause you can get about three hits to one strike. (Moving hand to hit drum once = Three sounds eminating from drum.)

"Flam" is usually used with two hands, but it's like having two hits very close to each other, not countable in sheet music. They do have a note for it that looks like a cue eigth note. But an example of a flan is hitting a snare with both your sticks, but not at the same time, to where it makes two seperate but rapid sounds. S in a sense it is kind of a "high speed roll," but not continuous.

Basically when you've got a basic roll going on... but you bring one stick higher than the other some times to make a more distinct sounding snare?

Kind of. But no roll. It's like one hit, but one stick doesn't meet at the same time the other does. It's usually used for accent. Because hitting the snare at the EXACT same time with both sticks won't neccessarily protrude a louder sound, but having a rapid force makes it seem louder for the sound that is lengthened by the seperate hits.

Yes, haha, please don't wake anyone. But that's how flams are - I'm happy it actually showed how it's written on sheet music too, that was nifty.

It's alot of fun to do, and it opens up alot of capability for songs.

Haha! I only know because of band class. Then I taught myself on piano, since it's in standard key as opposed to the alto saxophone.
