The shadow sain looks at mahen shurgs and then phases out of its shell and grabs shiros soul (or what ever bonds him to the body) and forces him into the shade where he could be killed

Shailik said, casting a Dragon shift spell on Frank, which doesn't work. "This is impossible! How can he be immune?"  Shailik walks over to a pedestal and pulls a cloth sheet off of a Dragon figure sitting on top. "A cursed Dragon statue. How original." Frank said.
