Why do they care so  much???
And WHY are they your friends if they will totally aquit you if you just-so-happen to be a member of a subculture that, mind you, is not a cult, is not (for the most part) a kink, I mean, logical thinking leads you to the realization that there is nothing wrong with said subculture (furry subculture) , and lateral thinking would suggest their appropriate response. If said response is as to the point of ridicule, than they obviously take up a role ill-suited to the purposes of a true companion.
