Openly furry?

I'm not.  I don't connect my actual person with my fursona. I mostly do it because it's a hobby and nobody needs to know what I do in my spare time unless their close to me.

I'm totally willing to be open about it when people are understanding. But I don't introduce myself as a furry. I'll show them my furry art, but usually I call them "anthro characters" and not sonas. Explaining that furries are good and not bad gets old after a while, so sometimes I don't say anything, but as long as people don't mind, then I'll be perfectly open about it. There's nothing to be ashamed of, after all, even if some people think so.

I'm at college, and openly furry on campus, but live in a very conservative place. If my parents knew they would flip.

Around my friends and those within my roleplay circles and at furmeets/furcons, and to people online. My parents know nothing about it (and it will remain that way), though I am hoping to start doing stuff more openly once I can get a fursuit head and craft my costume suit by doing things like visiting children's hospitals during the christmas season to give out gifts as my fursona.

If it comes up, I don't deny it, but I don't go around advertising it either. I do have a fursuit, and there are pictures of it on my facebook/twitter.


If the subject of the fandom comes up I'll talk about it and stuff but I don't go out of my way to say "Hey, I'm a furry"

I got into the fandom to make $$ money $$ on commissions, and ending up really loving the community. All my friends know I draw furry art almost exclusively as a job, so I guess I'm pretty open?

I'm not open at all. My entire family doesn't have a clue i'm a furry, they just assume i play the same games over and over again when i'm at my PC.

Also i plan on never telling them, because i know they would flip the F out if they knew.

They would most likely think i'm mad and start scheduling visits to the therapist again....

I have talked to a few of my friends about it, but only those that I knew would be interested or wouldn't care.  Those that I go to anime conventions with will find out soon enough since I made myself some furry paws, ears, and tail.  My parents don't know but I have lived away from home for a while since before I graduated college.  Otherwise, I am not overtly open about being a furry, but if anyone found out I wouldn't be overly stressed.  I would just educate them since they would most likely have a limited knowledge or no knowledge at all.

This is pretty much what did happen to me...

Long story short, one of my friends was going through some hard times which led my parents to look through my texts. My friend had found out that I was a furry because he had asked me directly, and this was in my texts. My parents then immediately assumed that was something sexual. They then drilled me on this and included this (as well as my friend's "problems") as a reason I needed therapy. I tried to explain that I, and many others, don't associate with any of the sexual areas of the fandom. I know my dad didn't listen but I don't have any clue what my mom thinks.

They don't care so much anymore however, so I might try to explain it to them again...

Other than that, I don't bring it up unless I have a reason to

I am open about it, but you wouldn't know it by looking at me. I don't have any swag or stuff. My artwork is almost entirely furry, but most people just see it as "quaint" or "eccentric".


If someone asks, I'll tell them I'm a furry. IDGAF

I don't get the whole being "openly furry" thing. It's a hobby. Am I openly a gamer? No, because that's just a hobby, I'll talk about games sure, but I don't go around saying "Hi, I'm a gamer, look at me I play games a lot." Maybe that's because that would just be boring though, I dunno.


The concept is confusing to me. Makes me feel like people treat being furry like being gay. Which it isn't. Right?

It depends on how much someone identifies as a furry.  For some, it is just a hobby.  For others, they have really identified as a furry and enjoy the fandom so much that they do anything and everything furry related.  And everything in between.

Im generally pretty brutally honest. I believe that to be any other way is a waste of time. Im me, like it or not, but if everyone immediately knows what im about, true friends show more and I find my enemies quicker.
