Moving to Portland, Oregon???

So I've always been interested in Portland because it just seems like home other than California (where I'm from); I've never been to Portland or Oregon but I plan to visit this summer. The only thing I'm worried about is the people, I hear they don't appreciate outsiders and they are very pretentious. I always see in the comment section of videos of Portland or Oregon in general to stop telling people to move there and that they don't want "transplants" (non-portlandians/oregonians) in their home. Does anyone on TFF live in Oregon/Portland and what are some false myths about the people of Portland/Oregon. I'm hoping it's just the stupid hipsters that want to keep their trendy town and that there is welcoming people and there is a chance of making friends there even though you are not from Oregon.

Online video comments are probably one of the last criteria I would use to determine if I should move somewhere. Oregon is actually pretty nice, in my opinion. I don't live there currently though.

Yeah haha, I've also tried forums as well but everyone says the same thing like "No, we don't want you here." and blah blah blah, it just defeats the hospitality that they say they have. I guess it's just hipsters maybe. I'll respect the ways of Portland and stuff, the whole reason I want to go there is because it has the right balance of city and nature. I'll just have to see when I go to visit!

Guilty, I watched it, it didn't perceive me as that's what Portland was like. I just thought they were generally making fun of the current social justice communities, and feminists all around. I mean I heard Portland is very liberal and protests against almost anything lol and I believe that. Portlandia isn't what drives me to go though, I just feel the nature mixed with city and changing of lifestyle will be additional help with my mental health.

What part of Oregon are you from? I'm seeing around so Portland isn't the only city to check out. I'd love to see other parts of beautiful Oregon!

Days Creek. Nothing here though, just a lot of farmland. Population of around 427, a lot of old people.

I lived there for a while. It's a city, to put it simply. A lot more artsy than most, but people are people, cities are cities. It's not a utopia and not a dystopia.


Basically, if you need to be there, go, but it's not worth making your dream home. People seem a lot more progressive than other places I've been, but inside we're all still people.

I agree with Billy, it's not really somewhere I'd call home... But I do like the city in its own little way. Artistic, colorful, killer architecture in the older sections of the city and tons of stuff to do. Good eats, too. There are lots of good people, but plenty of snobs, impatient douches and well... Douches. But I will say it's a mostly friendly population.

I've lived in Vancouver, Washington for almost a whole decade. It's a town just across the river from Portland, and I have plenty of friends in Portland to visit. Honestly, if you have any specific questions, I can answer them as well.

I'm glad to hear that, I was beginning to have doubts of moving there. Idk I guess I really shouldn't say it's home, but it just feels like the right place for change and also finally getting to express myself without judgement since it's known for being weird right? I'm going to be living in an RV so if Portland doesn't end up being the place I thought then I can just try elsewhere. How is driving over there? I plan on bicycling as transportation, but would still like to drive around once in a while. Also  what would be the best places to go when hitting up Portland?

Well... Driving in Portland is very iffy. It's very crowded and consideting it's a city, the drivers can be rather aggressive in their methods, but very few are road ragers nor will they roll their window down and shout obscenities. But frankly, public transit and bicycles are the way to go in Portland.

As for where to go, try Jantzen Beach shopping center, Lloyd Center (just beware the teenagers :U) and some of the locally named restaurants or food stands. There's also a racetrack near the drawbridge on I-5, a small beach just in front of PDX International that's rather nice, and the walkway is a very good exercise route. But to combine that want for driving and things to see, just drive the Columbia River Gorge. It's in more than just Portland, but it's worth every second.
