Look, we're a fandom.  Everyone hates fandoms.  Fandoms are often seen as annoying.  But we're a special case.  Years ago, MSM reported on furries and showed the darker side of our fandom.  Ever since, we've been known for sexual deviancy.

In short, keep it hidden, unless if you're absolutely sure that they'll be okay about it.

EDIT:  minor changes.

The same way they see the Brony community or any other somewhat 'odd' fandom(s). We're different, therefore we don't like them and such.

Eh, if there's something that sounds weird to someone they prolly won't be all for it. There's always something that's weird to someone out there.

The furry fandom is a too different to be simply shrugged off as "another hobby."  I mean, the bad rap didn't come about because the furry fandom is full of normies.

Negatively. I've been called anything from a freak, to a deviant, to someone who has sexual encounters with animals. It would be disheartening if I weren't beyond caring.

As for my parents, they're already people with, erm, negative views on homosexuality and liberals. If I told them I wanted to be an anthropomorphic rabbit, oh God. They think MANSCAPING is unreasonable.

Not all sees this as something negative... however i have had the... *sarcastic* Honer to meet someone non-furry, and one of my cousins friends too ...

and when he saw i had TFF open on my second screen he instantly said, "do you really liek f****** animals?" and i had no idea what to reply... but i ended up saying, "No.. i... don't" and i started telling him what we really where doing, i told him it was all about Friendship and next love... and understanding of differences, he actually ended up linking it... and he told me that he had seriously no idea what this was all about... and honestly i don't think "they" do... the "Non-furries" they are kind people but have a lack of understanding how we work and if we tell them they usually thinks its pretty cool i see that often :)

Yeah, people tend to be more amicable in real life. Though I have met plenty whose minds were made up. It's not always gloom.  :)

Most people will hop onto the bandwagon of 'Oh, they're sexual freaks, man-children, they must think everyday is Halloween," etc. However, thankfully that is not everyone outside of the fandom. Some people are more level-headed and just weirded out. But the more good we can do, the better our image will get. Once I get a full fursuit, I already have ideas about planning some meet-ups during the Christmas holiday for next year to visit children's hospitals as a fursuiting event. Visit children, give gifts and hope. Those who have already made up their mind about us aren't going to change. However, we can show those who may have never met us how good the fandom can be. We are generally a very charitable fandom with cons donating profits to charities, perhaps more than any other fandom convention.

I had a friend who had very negative knowledge about furries, she genuinely thought it was exclusively a sexual fetish. I'm still trying to set her straight.

It depends who your talking about.

Furry haters see us as animal rapists or people that want to be animals and not humans

Others who likely never heard of furries, will probably want to know more.

Worst comes to worst, just throw back "furries are fans of anthropomorphic animals, and you grew up with those" it works for me.
