I personally think the more human like they are, the more clothes they need. Also the more detail the more clothes. At least if you're going for sfw. So feral needs nothing, in my opinion, and human like needs human clothes.

I feel like clothes give them a little more personality and just overall adds to the picture

With my more recent sona revamp (no pun intended, AND I think I might've already mentioned this), I moved to no clothes. BUT I still have him with accessories and clothes in my head. Just not in any art yet. I still am partial to nicer vests, etc...

It really is a preference thing, but after my revamp, I can see the appeal of both.

I feel it strongly depends on the style and the artist here are a few examples.

Anybody remember Sonic the hedgehog?

Sally Acorn is a big deal to talk about and I'm not talking about the adult art.

Here is Sally Acorn from the first episode of the old Satam cartoon.

This is Sally Acorn later in that same comic.

notice the diffrence? it's an interesting story why they added the vest but that's another discussion.

Now for one of my other favorite characters and sort of a base for some of my Oc's Krystal from the Starfox series. I'm not going to get into any debates about her, so drop that now.

This is  Krystal in her first  appearance in a realeased game.
Krystal Starfox Adventures.
This is her later
Krystal Starfox Assault

So i really think that clothing depends on the character and their settings.

I think clothed furries look more civilized and less "Wild"
I don't have anything against unclothed furs tho.

it depends on the character Alex here lives in a sci-fi world whee there are many furries, scalelies  whatever.  but I do have some characters that wear no clothes like dragons and such, I even have a shape=shifter who doesn't wear clothes in a feral form but does in her anthro form.

Personally this is how I see it.

1.what sort of era is your character set in?

2. anthro or quadrupedal?

3. does it make sense for them to wear clothes?

- for me it comes down to how human like they are, and their normal form  because I have a couple of shape-shifters.

For another example look at Sonic.

anybody hear of the Sally Acorn uproar?

Essentially a lot of parents got peeved because Sally acorn looked like http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/sonic/images/2/2e/Sally_in_Heads_or_tails.png/revision/latest?cb=20131024211244

and didn't wear any clothing up top.

I like seeing furries without clothing. Not that I have anything against furs with clothes, it just makes more sense to have them without in my head.

I like pants and a shirt.

Unless I need to do something that requires a lack of pants and shirt.

Both yes and no. I usually leave it up to the artist to draw clothes, since I hate drawing them, but I think they look nice on Vael's anthro form.

Depends how detailed the subject is and the situation he is in. If they're in a "modern" society, the true definition of anthropomorphism of behaving exactly like humans, then the lack of clothing would be inappropriate and the humors that are involved with such a situation should one find themselves naked would play out normally.

Dial back a bit and you get the Looney Toons versions, no clothing, but Barbie Doll anatomy. No visible privates, yet clothing or lack thereof is ignored. Strip away the fur, though, and you get "naked humor."

Dial even further and you get the "tribal" sort, getting sort of bipedal versions of ferals. Loincloths are commonly seen, because if removed then privates will DEFINITELY be visible. We commonly see artwork from KenKet that fits this category.
