Feels like the media completely shuts us out.
« on: December 23, 2015, 05:12:29 PM »
I've been having a hard time finding interesting video games as of late. That's because so many of them are typical "hoomans r absolut gud, evrytng els iz ebil" type games that generally make me feel very angry when playing them regardless of gameplay, and a lot of the games with anthros and non-human goodguy characters suck.

One big problem I have is a game called Project X Zone, a colaboration between Namco, Capcom and Sega. They had all these bad*** villains coming in all forms: giant bunnies, anthros, monsters, robots... and yet the game doesn't even have ONE SINGLE PURE NON-HUMAN PLAYABLE! Sure, there's human characters who have fur or wings or metal armor, but not a single full non-human playable, meaning "looks NOTHING like a human except possibly anatomy." This was enough for me to not want to play the game... at all. Even when I did, the sole fact drained a lot of enjoyment I could have had. The second game came out recently and I was hoping to god they would fix this. I even said I would indefinitely buy the game if they had even one non-human goodguy playable. ...They didn't. Once again, it was yet another "hoomans r absolut gud, evrytng els iz ebil" type game like the last one.

I've been hugely peeved at Smash Brothers too. Mewtwo came out and I made no hesitation in buying. Then three more characters came out. ...They were all human. But I still bought them because I wanted to be a completionist. ...But with these last three, that desire turned into offense. I had my heart set on playing K. Rool, Wolf, or even Banjo. ...But no, THREE MORE HUMAN CHARACTERS! Cloud strife I was sort of okay with, but YET ANOTHER FIRE EMBLEM CHARACTER AND BAYONETTA!? TWO MORE "hoomans r absolut gud, evrytng els iz ebil" FRANCHISES, ONE OF WHICH ALREADY HAD MORE THAN ENOUGH CHARACTERS WHILE THE OTHER HAD REALLY NO BUSINESS IN THIS GAME!?! Frankly, I'm so offended by it that I've decided I will not waste another dollar on this game unless the creators decide to surprise us with one more DLC character that is NOT human.

I feel like us furries are an untapped market that is going too far ignored. We're treated as nothing more than a minority, so most companies don't even bother giving us even a single nod. That's why games like Project X Zone have ZERO non-human playables, and it feels like Nintendo, one of the last holdouts for anthro video games, is following this trend as well. I wish there was a way to get it out there that furries like videogames too, that furries will pay good money for good quality games with anthros as the goodguys, and that only jaded people are really going to pitch that huge of a fit if they even see one anthro that isn't evil in a video game. Lately with so few games with anthro goodguys in them, I almost feel like giving up videogames because nothing ever interests me anymore because it feels like we're alienated.

Seeing this makes me want to replace the furry characters in my game with humans.

Gee, thanks for the helpful and encouraging comment. It's comments like these that make me hate playing as humans even more. Plus, I'm not trying to start a fight.

But think of it like this: Seeing all this hate, all this anger over what characters look like...is this really something anybody wants to cater to? You claim it's a market, but if your attitude on the subject is any indication of what that market is like, then it's a good reason to avoid such a market.

I love games with multiple races to play as. I suppose the best example of a good game for you to play would be the Elder Scrolls. (If you haven't already played it.) And I do hate it in stories when they make the non-humans the enemies. It happens far too often.

I just don't think you get me.

It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but to me, what my character looks like is actually a huge deal. Anthro characters are cool, versatile, filled with cool abilities and personality. Humans are just... I'm human in real life. Playing as something I already am feels so boring, plus I don't personally like humans visually compared to most other creatures. In my opinion, humans are the most visually bland kind of character. I get that there are a lot of games staring them because the people making them are human, but does that really mean ALL games have to star us humans? Plus it's not just games not staring humans, it's the idea that humans are these god-like, flawless creatures and everything else is scum, and not just the usual wolves and demons, but bunnies and squirrels and other innocuous creatures too, which feels like it's shoved down my throat at times, that makes me not want to play most modern games.

Also, people get angry. That's human nature. We tend to vent our frustration. Not just furries do it, most people do. I don't see why this should be the sole deciding factor that decent anthro games have no business being made.

Because rage is not fun to deal with. Devs deal with enough as is, if they get it for making characters look a certain way, that audience is not going to be worth trying to satisfy.

My point is if the way something looks doesn't satisfy your preferences, don't insult people for it. Maybe even make your own stuff, if you can.

My problem is that that is not the entire furry fandom. One person shouldn't determine whether the whole entire group gets a game or not. That, and can you really say that a game with an anthro character is going to be THAT big of a deal for most non-furries? I'm sure more people than not would still play it. And for those that won't, they don't have to. Is it really a good thing that furries have to suffer through what feels like the same games over and over, year after year with maybe two or three (if you've been good) interesting titles breaking up the monotony?

No I haven't. I also am not trying to restrict it to furries in general. I just want games staring non-humanoids.

It sounds really fun, and I get what you're saying. There should definitely be more games that feature the main character as a non-human. Have you ever played the Spyro games? Or Sly Cooper games? Those are good examples.

Spyro fan since release. Still a Spyro fan into the Skylanders franchise. :)
Haven't played Sly Cooper though. I don't have any of the consoles Sly Cooper games are on.
