Its a little different for an elf. Our bodies are naturally tuned to the magic of the world. Anyone an do it but for us it comes naturally.  I use the magic generated between the push and pull of the spirits. It is however taxing on our bodies enough of it and an experienced elf can kill himself, its for this reason that young elves arent allowed to use their magic until they are ready. Usually around 200 years old
