Placebo is something that works like a medication but is actually not. It's basically tricking your body to think it's taken a med like penicillin but actually hasn't, yet the body produces the same effects of penicillin

Adding on to what Syn said, the placebo has no medicinal value at all. Typically it is a sugar pill. The purpose of the placebo is to test if a medication actually works.

Ex: Get two groups of people and give half a placebo and half real meds. If placebo group sees a 50% improvement, and the non-placebo gets a 97%, the meds work. If the placebo gets 50% and the medicine gets 47%, it does not work.
