Example. They were at negative two.
A ringing bell sounded, the voice taking on a militaristic tone. “At ease soldiers. Your next question is here!” Kaalin began making the previous drumroll noise that he had before, but the speaker cut him off. “Silence, maggot! I will not tolerate your insubordination!” Kaa stopped immediately, shrugging. “What is the reward for correctly answering a question?”
Nobody spoke. They stood silently until Kaalin grabbed the back of Jack’s coat and held him up in front of him so his feet barely touched the ground. Jade sidled up next to him and pressed the tip of her dagger into his side, twisting it slightly. She kept her face blank, but leaned up so her lips were against his ear. “Answer the nice man.” She whispered.
Jack swallowed, ceasing his struggles against Kaalin’s grip. His mouth dry, he managed to croak out, “More questions?”
“Damn it, Jack.” Jade started, drawing a fist back.
“That. Is correct. You are awarded one point.” The rest of the team breathed a sigh of relief, and Jade’s fist lowered marginally.
She looked around the fallen forest, shock clearly registered in her eyes. “Are you serious? This buffoon was actually right?”
Aria looked proud of herself and her insight into the situation, even if it technically didn’t involve her smarts. She was just glad that, for once, it wasn’t her putting their lives in danger. “Good job, Jack. That’s negative one. We have four left.”
“Your next question! Daily double! Twotwotwo for the price of one!"
“What?!” Jade moved from Jack as Kaalin set him down. He’d earned her backing off, at least. “We didn’t say we were ready for the next question!”
“A fundamentalist can’t bring himself or herself to negotiate with people who disagree with them, because the negotiating process itself is an indication of implied equality.”
Jade, confused, stopped in her tracks and scratched her head. “What?”
“I think it means our acceptance to continue was implied.” Aria whispered to her.
“Implied by what?” Jade lashed out at a speaker, kicking its protective mesh in. “Damn it, this is bullshit! Just come out and fight, you bloody pile of wires!”
Aria went to soothe her, but Ames put a hand on her arm and gently pulled her back. “Don’t bother. Let her get it out of her system.”
Sorry Pegu. Jack was an idiot enough to get it right. But with that answer, it brought them up to negative one, so the ground didn't drop out. These next two they will get wrong. At -3 the floor drops.
