Just Another Night Gone Wrong

WARNING: this short story contains foul language, tobacco and alcohol use, and violence.

I started writing this after I woke up in a movie theatre. It was a movie that I disliked strongly so in a tired haze I tapped away at my phone. A month later this is what I left with. Also yes this is a sequel to my other "This Will Be A Movie" that I am still working on. Here we go

Story

November 10th, 1976 3:18 AM- I walk out of the cool theater with a sip from my flask as I exit. The film I saw was Taxi Driver, Starring Robert de Niro and was directed by Martin Scorsese. It was great, an awesome display of someone being pushed to the edge and inevitable breaking point by their hatred of humanity. Anyway, I walk home lighting a cigarette. Coughing as it made my mouth and throat completely dry which caused the urge to take another drink.

"Need to quit this shit" went through my head again, I had the same excuse as any heavy smoker "I can quit anytime I want, but why would I". I approached the door and walked in only to get a few bucks in dollars and loose change. I blew my cash on the theater and needed to get more to head to a bar and think the night over...or maybe just for a game of darts. I didn't care, my flask wasn't enough for the night and being awake for..lets say 78 hours..I think, I wasn't in the mood for fixing a drink. I head out the door with a trail of smoke and taping the ash from it on the front steps. I lived in a nice town which barley counted as part of the city. The mall, bar, convenience store was all that was there. Aside from a couple apartment buildings all in a row, that was it. It was just a corner of a road that ended at the city.

Anyway I make my way to the bar and open the doors and sat down. One toke over the line was playing on the stereo, some of the drunks were all in a row humming and rocking and overall having a good time. I sat at the bar, pawing for my wallet and finally found three quarters. I dropped 'em on the counter and asked for a Singapore sling with mescaline on the side..just kidding that drink took too long to make and I needed a immediate release so Instead I asked for a White Russian.

They mix and I watch the tv mounted to the wall. "A man beaten to death by a hammer in his home."  "That sick **censor**" snorted the bartender "that's the fifth **censor** victim this month" he put my drink down and pushed it towards me on a napkin. "Let it go,Kev" I retorted "Unless he comes running through your door I don't see any reason to get involved". I took a sip from the cup. I've had this drink so much and I love it the same amount. My first time was in the late 60s, after that I demanded the recipe. "Besides, the police are barley involved themselves" I took another sip and Kev looked at me "what?" I said "You mean to tell me that after 5 murders the police barley stick their toe in?" He asked "yep" I said. I finish the cup and tapped on the table in order to say "another one". Kev did this but in a shocked fashion. "What?" I said breaking the silence, "nothing" he said shaking his head he walked back to the register and to the bathroom. I sigh and take another sip and look around. This place was like a second home to me, the vibe in here was always great and the people here (aside from the ones in the corner) were always happy and either singing or passed out with a smile on their face and a half empty beer. I stay there for a bit and finally walk home.

November 10th, 4:01 AM 1976-As I walk up the steps I notice the front door has been kicked open. I run inside grabbing my colt from the bottom of a coffee table and begin to search the house. I then felt stupid as I just realize I could turn the lights on. This reality smacked me in the face and I walk to the light switch. A cold piece of metal pops me in the nose and I fall on the glass coffee table, shattering it instantly. The dark bastard of a figure pause and then darts for the door. I quickly get up and shoot three shots blindly at the doors direction.

I get up, Hearing the glass fall out of my back and the warmness of the blood coming out my nose and onto my mouth and dripping onto my white button down and tie, staining them instantly. I took a swig from my flask and shamble to the door. I trip and fall on the railing and saw the **censor**. He slumped on the street just below my steps in a pool of his own blood and a hammer in his hand. I walk down and pick up the hammer, stained in my blood and having five tally marks on the handle. "Son of a bitch" I mumble to myself as a shadow is cast on the wall I front of me with red and blue. "DROP THE WEAPON" said a voice followed by the sound of a shacking pistol. "DROP THE **censor** GUN" said again. I turn around and was greeted by a baton to the face and darkness.

November 10th, 4:36 AM 1976-I wake up in a pool of drool and blood on leather with a headache worse than my hangover. I sit up and see the doors the cage and the two snickering jackasses in front of me. Well this wasn't the first time I've been arrested, only the first by this force. Can't say the same 'bout being framed..well I suppose there's a first time for everything.

The two **censor** in front of me found out I'm up and snicker and giggle even louder. I snarl quietly and only now notice the tightness of the cool metal around my wrists. I lye down on the seats and bring my hands from behind my waist and into my lap and I sit up. I grab my flask and take a swig. I also grab a cigarette and lighter and put the cig in my lips and flick the lighter. One of the pigs hear this and one of them turn around and my eyes meet his "OH **censor**" he wails "HE'S ESCAPING" "Relax" I said through smoke "I ain't escaping, just having a smoke is that ok?". For some **censor** reason that I'll never understand is he turns around and doesn't talk anymore.

I exhale the smoke...ok, let's deduce the situation. I walked home only to be greeted by the *AHEM* "hammer killer" waiting for me. He try's to take his sixth life, assuming that one blow could take a man of my size. He's shocked that I'm still alive at all and runs for the door but only to be stopped by two .25 rounds to the back and one  into the neck. Someone heard this (most likely some old asshat across the road) and calls the cops. The **censor** in front of me find me and think I killed this man in cold blood with a hammer and arrest me and find the tally marks on the hammer and by some Wild West bullshit logic think I killed five other folks. And now their taking me to the station for questioning. And I thought of sleeping tonight, HAH how **censor** dumb of me.

November 10th, 4:45 AM 1976 - We arrive at the station and I walk in with the two cops behind me. We enter this room that as cliché as it sounds, was white with that mirror window thing and the single table.   They release my red wrists and sit me down with the command "Don't. **censor**. Move" and then left muttering "jackass".
Then some snooty government **censor** comes in the room. All with a tie, suitcase, and suit. " alright...uh..Summer?" I nodded as he went on "So let's just get down to the bulk of it. Why'd you kill those five, six people" I really did consider punching him right in the **censor** nose and it was really tempting but instead I look down and reach for my cigarettes and decided to play his game.
" I didn't kill anyone besides what you saw and that was in self defense

"But the hamme..?"

"It belonged to the jackass I killed. He killed five people before he tried to kill me. Maybe if you actually, oh I don't know, did your **censor** job, you might. Just might have noticed" He looked at me in aw, I assume it's because no one has ever talked to any government jackass like that. He got up and went behind the mirror/window thing and I sit there in silence. Two cops come back handcuff me and walk me out.

They finally throw me into a cell with another inmate. He was white with a bunch a scars and tattoos. He cracked his knuckles as I enter the cell and sit down on the bed. This cell was made for four, evident by the two bunk beds.  I made no contact with the brooding inmate. If I had made any type of interaction with him he would see it as a threat, I just knew it. I walk in and sit on the lower bunk and stair up at the dirty mattress above. I was tempted to kick it just to see all the dust and guff come down. "Gotta smoke" said the brooding prisoner. I turned over to look at him to see if he was just talking to himself, he wasn't.  I sighed and sat up pulling out two cigarettes and a match.  I toss one of the two smokes and the match to the prisoner and he catches it then lights up. I do the same with a swig of my flask leaving it empty. We both light up at the same.

"What'd you In for?" came from across the room. "Good question" I replied "you?" I asked. "Rape" he said "good to know" I retorted. We sat there, puffing away, and slowly I drift asleep unwillingly. The image that I left with was the other inmate pulling the blanket over his head. Good night
