Ventus is my first fursona, well... my first character I used as a fursona. I specifically made her to represent myself in the furry fandom and online in general after joining the fandom and these forums.
It was quite simple for me in the beginning. What animals/creature do I feel the closest a connection to?
DRAGONS
I have loads of dragon figures and (action) figures/toys, and a few plushies as well. I have just as many bunny/rabbit items, but dragons can be designed in every way, any colour, any shape or form. They can be large or small, they can breath fire, water, steam, or anything else! You have Eastern dragons and Western dragons. Etc. etc.

So my decision was a dragon, I could design a dragon character however I wanted, and it also represented art and creativity for me.
The colour green was chosen, as I saw loads of dragon characters and dragon sona's with a huge variety of colours, specifically colours like white, black, blue, yellow, purple, etc. I barely saw any good-old green dragons. I liked green, but I wanted a second colour too. I didn't feel yellow or orange would be a good choice, as that would perhaps make it seem more like a typical old-fashioned green Western dragon. So I looked into colours, and at the time was really into complementary colours. Green and red are complementary to one another. It's funny... Green is one of my favourite colours, but of complementary colours the combination green and red are my least favourite XD I like yellow+purple and orange+blue the most, but thanks to me having designed Ventus like so, I've come to appreciate the green+red combination a lot more ^-^

Colours are extremely important for me, so that's why I have to think a lot when adding colours to any of my characters, this includes Ventus.
With her redesign, I decided to take the chance to implement a colour combination I absolutely love: green+purple+orange, but with the red still implemented :D

Personality-wise she's me. I want to sometimes represent myself as my other fursonas. They all represent me in a way, but I can't seem to get rid of Ventus, and that is probably due to her being the first representation of me online. It's hard to shake off :P

Well Vinny started off as a old mlp oc but once I left that fandom I needed to rework him and sadly at that time my first rat had died of old age so as a tribute to him I modeled and nammed Vinny after him

There is a decent fox population in my area, so I've grown up seeing them a lot. I also have a lot of dogs. I didn't just want to be a fox, and I didn't want to be just a dog. So I figured a hybrid would suit me, since I'm an ethnic mutt anyway. Cx Though I've been told my sona looks more wolf like than anything else...

I didn't choose mine. Mine chose me.

I was dreaming of my Granddad's house. It was twilight outside. Sky was a brilliant orange. I was walking to the side of the outside of the house and saw a cardboard box lying out there. Curious I approached it, and saw a little fox there, curled up in a ball. It noticed me and looked up at me with bright eyes. It rose to its feet and was acting excited. I picked him up and held him in my arms, licking my face and treating me as if I was an old friend.

I'll never forget that dream. "Ishi" was what I called it.

I have grown to really enjoy the medieval era. The culture, society etc. And in that time, people in my country spoke a language more similar to today's Icelandic. So I decided to make a character from Iceland (or, the North as I call it in the furry universe).
Iceland has an abundance of glaciers, so I figured a creature from a cold environment would be ideal. That's when the idea of an arctic fox hit me. And so it came to be.

Before this, I tried a cat, an ewe and a goat, neither of which worked out.

Shoon is my go to RP and DnD character forever 8 years, I slowly developed the personality and traits, hates and likes, style.
When I turned him into my fursona I just mashed up thing I like.  I really like dragons, how they fly, the tails, the wings, horns,  everything. I thought about the color but I wanted to keep it simple and not neon yet fancy, so silverish gray was go to for me.
When I got into actually designing the character I understood that I want something that makes sense biologically, so I built an evouletnry timeline which took quite a bit of work and then I designed Shoon based on that.

Mine isn't either. All that's different about mine is that he just has an extra tail. That's it. No special markings, colorings, nothing.

You don't need all of the extra crap in my humble opinion. My fursona is still a representation of me and I can't bring myself to change him.

Not sure if choose would be the right word for me since Charlie and i are the same by soul. He never really had a appearence before this year and always tagged along in the background so to speak. We both know, wanting to act out would cause people to take a distance from us (and i can understand them for that). I think Charlie is the reason i am into the furry fandom and anthros as much as i am while i myself like other things aswell that i think is not due to charlie.
So "choosing" Charlie have not been the case since he have been with me as long as i can remember but as a formless soul of a wolf. And reason for his appearence would be how we both would have wanted to look if we could be anthros.

I actually didn't choose anything. My fursona chose me :D
No, really, I never chose my fursona nor worked on my design. This is why my design is so simple and basic. It is just me, me as an animal, and I do not have fancy colours and markings as a human, then there is no reason for me to have fancy colours and markings as an animal. My fursona isn't supposed to be a design nor a character anyway, then, there were nothing to choose.... Only to feel.

The looks just sort of popped into my mind, as did a personality, so I developed the backstory to lead to his personality.

That is a fairly long story, spanning a lot of roleplays which refined my fursonas and helped me understand their place a bit better. I don't just have one, since I didn't feel like I could really just use one. I like to use my fursonas as roleplay OCs as well, so for that reason, I have 4 main ones. All my other OCs are just that.

My main one, Alka, is a culmination of plenty of time spent roleplaying, a lot of thought and about a lot of 'me'. He's my go-to whenever I want a direct representation of the kind of person I am, since the common ground between me and him is personality.

The first other one I created was a branch of Alka which originally was supposed to be just for roleplays with more fighting involved, but eventually manifested himself as something more. I get angry at people a lot. And it's even more frustrating that I both can't and won't do anything significant about it. Al was born out of that frustration, a sociopathic anti-hero who has little-to-no proper connections with other people.

My third one, Gaia, was made to replace an older one of mine - Auron. She's an amalgamate of my more feminine qualities, put into an actual female.

The last one I made was created during a more... dark period of thought. AI-1009 is a very literal manifestation of how alienated I feel from everyone else at times and how much people use me like I was programmed for that purpose.

I just really like huskies  XD
I first chose a wolf but my fursona didn't really match a wolf's characteristics much, So husky was an easy second choice.
