Alan couldn't bear to watch, once he realized David was bitten. Before Holly even drew back the knife, he threw down the bag of dried meats and plodded down the hallway to explore the rest of the cabin, trying to keep his mind occupied on other things.
He ran his scaly fingers along the wooden paneling until he felt the cold touch of a doorknob. He tried it. To no surprise, it was unlocked.
"Hello," he whispered, testing the waters.
Silence was the response.
He pushed the door open and walked inside. The switch on the wall brought the room to life. Bright colors clashed with the rest of the house. Shiny, hand-painted toy cars and other toys adorned the knotty pine shelves that lines the walls.
He picked one up and looked it over.
It wasn't even dusty.
Kids must have stayed there to go hunting with the guy.
A heavy thought bent in Alan's mind. He set the toy back in its place. God, he hoped they were far away from this place....
He flicked the lights off and pulled the door closed once again.
An unintentional glance to his side, and a cracked door grabbed his attention. He could just make it out in the dim light coming from the living room at the other end of the hall, but it seemed like the cabin had stairs tat led to the basement.
"Hey guys...?" He called over his shoulder. "Should we check out the basement before getting any more comfortable here?..."
