The bear cub's eyes darted around as he briefly weighed his options. He let go of the pellet gun, letting Holly confiscate it from him for the time being.
"It's empty anyway," he sighed in defeat. "I'm Amos. These are my cousins, Nate and Lisa," Nate said as he gestured to the two huskies huddled behind him. They had since stopped shivering with fear and instead wore a collective face of curiosity.
Amos' eyes flashed over to Alan's shotgun.
"That was... my grandpa's," he murmured.
"It was upstairs with the other guns," Alan replied. "Do you know how to shoot a real gun?"
"Of course I do," he defended. "We were going to go hunting in the morning, except-"
"Except your uncle went outside and didn't come back," Alan finished.
The group nodded. Nate continued for Amos. "No one came back yet. Do you know if they're okay?"
Alan gritted his teeth. He couldn't look them in the eyes and tell him that everyone they knew was dead. He just couldn't.
"We might have passed them on the way here," He lied. "I think they said something about leaving town."
A wave of sadness washed over the children.
"They're leaving us here??" Nate wondered aloud.
"Are they mad at me?..." Lisa's eyes welled up with tears. "Tell them I'm sorry...! I didn't mean to disobey them...!"
Nate held his sister as she sobbed into his shoulder.
A moment of silence passed before Amos broke it.
"They aren't coming back... are they?"
Alan sighed and shook his head. "No.... No, they aren't. I'm sorry."
"Is... the store room still unlocked?"
"Blaine broke down the door."
Without another word from Amos, he walked with past Alan and Holly and trudged up the stairs, coming back shortly with an armful of guns, ammunition, and accessories. He struggled, but his face lacked any emotion that would betray the fact that he could barely hold onto the weight of the load in his arms.
Nate still held onto Lisa, and Lisa clung to Nate as her tears continued to fall. He watched Amos vacant-eyed as the bear loaded up empty clips with bullets.
"We can wait it out here," Nate spoke softly, his paws running gently through his sisters hair. "Don't worry about us. Just lock the doors when you go."
Alan stood up and took a couple steps back. He looked at Holly.
