Hunter is putting away the glassware that he finished polishing. He looks up when Pyrus walks in. "Do you have a new lesson for me?" he asks excitedly.

[Pyrus]

"Sure do. We are going to make charcoal, about 10 lbs of it"
[Pyrus grins]

Go to the fire pit out back and collect wood for a fire, and get an empty paint can from the back.

Hunter's ears droop a bit in disappointment at the mundane nature of the lesson, but he does as instructed. He returns to the shop with an armful of firewood and holds up an empty metallic paint can as well. "I got em!" he says.

[Pyrus pulls out a Phillips head screw driver and punches one tiny hole in the lid and fills the can with wood chips. He piled the wood into the pit and starts the fire. Once it roars, he places the can in the fire and a bit of smoke starts coming out of the hole]
This is the best part of alchemy. It's an experiment you don't have to worry about.

Hunter watches the fire curiously. "But is that really alchemy?" he asks. "I've seen my uncle do that before, and I'm pretty sure he's not an alchemist."

[Pyrus]

"It is the stepping stone to bigger and better things.  For without this crucial step, gunpowder can not be rendered"

[Pyrus takes a twig lights it on fire and touches the flame to the smoke coming out of the hole. It ignited and sounds like a blowtorch on full steam.]
Once the flame stops, it is finished.

Hunter's eyes widen in amazement. "Woah! That's awesome!" he exclaims, taking a closer look at the can. "How does that work?" he asks, looking between the stick and the gout of flame spitting from the top of the can.

That is a byproduct of cooking everything but the carbon out. (Btw this works irl fyi)

And that byproduct is called wood gas. Strong enough to run a car at 85% efficiency
