She smiled in her sleep briefly at the feeling of arms around her then shivered, curling into a ball. Her eyelids fluttered as a nightmare came and passed.
She took two long pieces of cloth cut in the shape of an over sized person. Using thick black cord, she sew on two X's for eyes, a series of five X's for a mouth then stuffed a little sand and a charm from her aunt's bag. Sewing up the doll, she hugged it to her chest protectively. "I'll call you Ticktock, my protector. I'll always love you, Ticktock. You're my best friend." She murmured, hiding the doll in her quill as she put the thread and cloth back then continued on down the trail, looking for an animal that helped her calm down.
The lizard watching her scuttled down the tree and followed, crawling to perch atop a stump a little ahead of her. "Hello Sam. Welcome home." He whispered in her head, smiling his lizard's smile. His pale brown eyes glittered in the sunlight.
"Good afternoon, Pogomani. Have you decided to come home with me for the day?"
Yes, we can leave at sunset. I see you've made another friend. Who is this?" He asked, indicating the rag doll.
"This is Ticktock. Ticktock, meet Pogo." She introduced, hugging the doll tightly. "He's my best friend." She announced, holding out her arm for Pogomani to crawl up and perch at her shoulder.
He nuzzled her neck, wrapping his tail around the other side. "He seems very nice, dear. Do I get to meet your family?"
"I guess. Can I bring Ticktock?"
"Sure sweetie. Let's get going so we're not her at nightfall. Would you be sleeping in the hay again or in the dirt?"
"The dirt. I don't live in the barn anymore. It burned down last week." She nuzzled the lizard back and started to walk back down the trail to a small town resembling Salem. "Welcome to Aelms, Ticktock, Pogomani. I hope you enjoy your stay." She whispered with asmile, hugging the doll closer to herself...
The fires started in the middle of the night. The smell of smoke drifted in and out of the street she was sleeping in, waking Pogo and Ticktock. They struggled to wake her but it was no use, she was in a coma brought on by almost no sleep in a month. She slept through the fires that destroyed Aelms and left the barn she'd called home in ashes. When she did wake up, the only living thing near her was Ticktock. She held him close to her, tears streaming down her face. "I told you Ticktock, I love you and I'll always be hear for you..."
She shivered, hugging an imaginary rag doll to her chest protectively. "My Ticktock...My best friend...my.... forever..." She whispered, straightening up as she began to sleep-walk.
