Supposedly the Greater Good
« on: August 10, 2008, 10:39:14 PM »
If you don't know me, I'm not surprised, but I'm not a newbie or anything. Here goes my attempt at starting a roleplay.

Setting:
The fair land of Burain, in the kingdom's captial city of Cerkath. It's early autumn.

Plot:
The king, a wise fox furre, was a righteous man in most peoples eyes; ruling fairly, people have agreed, over both humans and furres. There was some debate to how honestly fair he was, but all in all, he was a great ruler with a sense of justice, or at least, a greater ruler than a lot of others that could have been in his position. Unfortunately, no king, no matter how great, can live forever. He had no heir; no prince or princess, or queen, to give the throne. Upon his deathbed, he announced one of his 3 lords, the mighty Arkhe, an ex-knight human, as the new ruler of the land.

People were horrified. Arkhe was known very well for his ruthless tactics of taking care of problems; though the decision may have been wise, considering the kingdom was troubled as far as her relationships with her allies were concerned. Arkhe managed to avoid war, and all seemed well, despite some furres being given ill treatment; which sparked up the next problem.

The king was vastly biased against furres. Eventually, after too many furres were ill-treated, a resistance group was formed, consisting of both furres and humans. They wanted a new leader; that leader was one of the lords, another ex-knight, Poro, also human (there were no furre lords). Some objected; Poro might not be any better than Arkhe, but at least people knew he had no bias against furres; if anything he was in their favour, due to particular events occuring during his life involving furres.

Eventually, the resistance group grew large. They invaded the palace, and at risk of the kings life, forced him to give up the crown. Poro happily accepted the crown, and all was well again; but naturally, not for long. The people had been almost right; Poro still treated the furres unfairly, but he also treated the humans unfairly. No one was recieving fair treatment any more. Of course, resistance reared up again; but this time, there was more than one group.

There was the first group, self-named Justice. They consisted of mainly the same people as last time; they wanted the third lord, Iope, to be their new leader. He was old, and some accused him of being unintelligent, but surely he could treat the people better than Poro or Arkhe... the people hoped. However, some people said the lord wasn't fit for a position of such importance; he was too dull-witted to rule, and no good would come of it.

There was the second group, self-named Order. This consisted mainly of humans; they wanted Arkhe back in power. For one, at least the humans would get treated right, and some of the people in the group, the furres mainly, believed that if Arkhe were to be given a second chance, he would fix the errors of his ways, and rule fairly. Of course, some people, mainly furres, were skeptical of this.

And then there was the third group, Freedom. These people believed that the people in power were corrupt; who they truly needed as a leader was someone who'd been through the troubles in life, and knew about fair treatment and how to make life good for all. The man they'd elected as their leader was a furre; a fox, who liked to call himself 'the fair Kings spirit', meaning he believed the fair King resided within his body. Some people said he would be no better than the others; the power had gone to his head, it was said, and he would lose himself in a position of power.

Naturally, with 3 rising resistance groups against the king, the entire kingdom was close to a time of civil war. All of the groups hated one another. All the groups have agreed to a truce; there will be no fighting, for the sake of common people. At least, there will be no fighting within the streets of cities... though outside of the cities, the rules still apply, but few listen to them... innocent citizens are scared for their lives to leave the cities, let alone their houses. There have been reports of innocents being mercilessly killed outside their homes, being mistaken for enemies, and it's worse in the forests and on the roads...

Now, due to the nature of the roleplay, I'd like all of the players to be on the same team. Why? Because although I'd like to think that we're sensible enough to avoid instant kills in fighting and such, there WILL be issues with combat. Due to the fact that a lot of the fights are between people that absolutely detest each other in character, the chances are death WILL be involved, and people who are largely attached to their characters will probably not like the sight of their character dying. I know I don't want my characters to die. BUT, if you'd like to be able to engage in combat with others, tell me in the support thread; if I'm outnumbered on my choice, I'll allow teams to be picked, but once again, if you vote that way, you accept that you're risking your character with death. At the moment, we're all Team Justice.

RULES:
1) I'm not going to limit characters, nor am I going to tell you to colour each character's actions differently, I never liked that method. But PLEASE, make it CLEAR who does what in your post. And though there's no official limit on characters, don't have so many that we get confused. Around 3 should be enough for anyone, but if it isn't, go ahead and make more.
2) This is fantasy. Magic and stuff is certainly allowed. BUT, you have to be reasonable. If your character is a teenager, they are NOT going to be a master at whatever magical ability you grant them; same with swordplay and such. Power is allowed only within reason; specialising a character in one magical ability is fine. If your character has exceptional magic and you're reluctant to take away their abilities, give them weaknesses to balance it out; be realistic, no "if you strike me with a silver plated dagger in the palm of my hand then I will be weakened" or anything ridiculous.
3) Do NOT control other peoples characters, no matter how tiny the action is. One of the best aspects of roleplaying is not knowing what the other person will do, whether they'll co-operate or not; and if you control them, that defeats the element.
4) I'm in control of the environment and most NPCs. Of course, you can control some of them to a reasonable extent (i.e. calling the bartender over in an inn and have him take orders) but don't go overboard.
5) If I tell you to leave, I'm not being nasty (honest, I'm not), I'll have my reasons to do so. The chances are that I will give you appropriate warning before I kick you out, but again, if you're reasonable it shouldn't come to that.
6) NO flaming out of character. Naturally characters may not get on very well, but there's no need to have a go at another person for it. If you think someone's being unreasonable towards you (or someone else for that matter) in character, POLITELY ask them why.
7) More of a note than a rule, but you can be a furre or a human, I don't mind.
8) I know there's the whole human/furre rivalry that always seems to pop up no matter how you try to avoid it; but seriously, guys, don't go mental over it. Humans ARE in the resistance groups as well, fighting alongside the furres.
9) If your character has traits or weapons from other societies (i.e. Japanese katanas) at least make it realistic. For example, someone with a Japanese name who fights with a katana should probably be from Japanese origin. And, I'd just like to add, don't go mental over the Japan background, I'd like to see some variety. A lot of the people will be from Burain, seeing as this is the land we're roleplaying in. Think of Burain as a medieval England-like place.
10) I reserve the right to add more rules as we go, in case I've missed anything important. I'll probably notify you all before I do.

Use the Support thread to add your characters; and you can also vote on what group you'd like all players to belong to, if you don't like Team Justice. You can also vote whether you mind having everyone on the same team or not.

Other than that, have fun! I'll wait for people to join.

((Go ahead. I'll start, if you like.))

A horse drawn cart wheeled into town slowly, with various foods and other goods in the back. In the front, there was the driver, an old man; on either side of him were two people; a human, and a furre, both with swords. Eventually, once they reached a particular tavern, the horses stopped, and the boy and furre got off. "Thanks for the ride, Mr. Long!" Vlaardi called out, as the horses started heading towards the market again.

Fyroh looked uneasily around himself, while Vlaardi looked to the sun. "Hmm... Wasn't it sunset that they asked us to meet in the basement of this tavern? For our group?" Vlaardi asked.
"Uh huh." Fyroh nodded. "Team Justice, basement of the Lions Tail Inn. It looks like we're pretty much on time... but we can hang around for a while, I guess. How about we get something to drink? Maybe we'll see some other members inside the tavern." he said.
Vlaardi nodded. "Fine by me, but don't have too much. You know how our leader likes to stretch out the point."
"I was only planning on having water..." Fyroh hesitated.
Vlaardi raised an eyebrow. "You weren't." he said, and laughed.

The two entered the tavern, and caught a relatively empty table... which wasn't saying much, considering a lot of the tables were empty. "It's kind of sad for the people who run these inns and such. What with all the fighting amongst groups, it's hard for shops to get business..." Fyroh said to himself, and sighed, staring into space.
"Well, at least they get Justice members here, and a lot of them." Vlaardi replied. "But you're right, it's pretty empty in here..."

The place seemed barren, but there was negative energy around her, she knew for sure. Keeping a sharp eye, Rigor noticed one wolf furre and one human entering the tavern and couldn't help but overhear their conversation. It wasn't sad that people were feuding; they always did.. There was no changing that. The group Justice was up for electing an old timer; and he would die just like the fox did. Peace would be only a temporary option. She smiled, laughing, as she adjusted her tattered black cloak and stood, hanging her Scythe over her shoulder and making her way to the pair.

It was a bright sunny day within the city as he sat upon a high ledge overlooking the market place. Humans and furs rushed about their daily lives buying and selling the latest wares. Here and there he caught sight of snickering and in other places sneering. There was a palpable tension in the air and he could feel it. He smiled and jumped down to ground level and began making his way down the street. The conditions where ideal for one of his profession. Humans brushed against him as they past by giving no heed to his presance, and while this might upset anybody else its was fruitful for his needs.

"Ignorance!" he thought to himself whilst peering from under his hood, his sharp eyes taking in all the details as he surveyed his surroundings. "All a bunch of fools. Despite their very lives in the balance of a few men they scurry about in their pointless lives. Luckily today I'll get to put an end to one of them" His lips curled into a devlish smile at the thought showing razor sharp teeth. He had a mission pure and simple, to assassinate aparticular fur speaking out against the ruler his faction was trying to get into power.

He stood out amongst the crowd despite his efforts to conceal himself in rag. A fairly tall raptor with a blade strung across his back there were no other of his kind in the entirety of the city. Few were foolish enough to get in his way but it wouldn't matter if they had. It was not wise for a assassin to kill everybody because of petty squables, it would attract to much attention. He continued down the streets till almost ritualistic propoganda filled his ears being shouted by a fox with some ferver. The target was in the open he couldn't attack without alerting the guards so he waited calmly, watching on as if he was a simple bystander to the fox's cause.

The fox was ordinary, not of particular renown or bearing the mark of a seasoned warrior. He was little more then a citizen in a opposing faction trying to recruit more to serve the cause. That however was about to end soon.

she perched on her brick wall looking out towards the busy town. with a heavy sigh she jumped of and started walking into town for some much needed groceries. keeping her head down as her brother had told her she only had eyes for decent prices. After awhile she decided that she desrved a treat, so walking into the tavern she brought a cool lemonade drink and sat down by the window to watch the people outside

Archaic and Shadow found the town pretty much as they had expected. Bustling on the surface, but with something sinister underneath the guise of normality. Of course, Shadow was a bit weary of the boys intuition at this point. He was, after all, occasionally wrong. "It seems safe enough here." "Perhaps... Let us see if we can find a lodging." The two head for a tavern, the felines black cloak flowing and the coyotes light chain mail vest clinking beneath his jacket.

Vlaardi looked into the window behind himself, seeing the busy lives of folk about. "And sadly, by nightfall, not a soul will be on the streets... it's too dangerous..."
"Unless you have a weapon." Fyroh responded. "If you can defend yourself against others, it's fine..."
Vlaardi sighed. "True, but why would you attack someone on the other team? Because they had a weapon, no doubt..."
Fyroh groaned. "Now you're just being difficult. "

Vlaardi continued to stare out of the window absent mindedly, while Fyroh began drumming his fingers on the table, considering the amount of time he had left, and if there was enough to have something to eat. The pair almost didn't notice Rigor approach them; Fyroh looked up just as she came closer, and grinned. "Alright, there?" he said, which made Vlaardi jump. The two looked over the newcomer for a moment, before Fyroh said, "Take a seat with us if you like, we were considering ordering just now."
Vlaardi looked suspiciously at the newcomer for a few moments, before giving Fyroh a dull look. "I wasn't ordering anything except water, but what you going to have, a three course meal?" he said sarcastically.
Fyroh ignored him completely.

Night was falling upon the city, the moon's glow caressing the town softly. Most of the streets had cleared and the fox's banter of religeous like propoganda concerning his choice of lord had come to an end. The fox made his way down the street torwards an inn. The raptor assassin followed carefully, the only light shining given from the various windows of the streets many houses and taverns. He couldn't allow the fox to enter the tavern he might loose his chance to kill him. His pace quickened dodging the drunk pedestrians as they milled about the streets.

The fox stopped for a second before entering the tavern door and fumbled through his pack as if looking for something, this proved to be fruitful for the raptor as it gave him the perfect chance. He ran up to the fox quick as lightning and grabbed him, spinning the frightened speaker to face him before quickly slashing as his throat with his sharp claws. The fox grasped his throat and gasped for air. "Let thiss be a lesson for they who seek to fallow in your footstepss" he Raptor said as he kicked the fox in the door. Before he slunk into a side alley he tossed a small token, a signature of his he place on his kills, on the fox.

There in the alley he watched, keeping careful attention to the various scents of the area to make sure he wasnt followed.

A young furre slipped into Lions' Tail Inn, glanced around at the few patrons and sat at the table with Fyroh and Vlaardi. Her emerald eyes glowed softly as her midnight fur gave off a gentle shine from the light of the fire. She put her paws on the table, sighing as she watched the human and furre interact, smirking to herself.

"Ah.." Rigor said, exhaling and taking a seat. Carefully, she slipped her scythe onto the back of her chair. "I've been waiting to order, but it seems as if I'm a little... Intimidating in appearance." She jerked her head in the direction of the barkeep. "So what business brings you here to this particular tavern?" She smiled a toothy grin, revealing her purple gums and stitched sides of her mouth.

The duo found a seat in the tavern, Arke momentarily fascinated by a dragon that stood out for some very obvious reasons. "Not polite to stare, boy." Shadow elbowed him in the ribe to drive the point home, and they sat down with no further incident. "Try to stay anonymous, at least until I can get a feel for this place. There could be danger here, more than you are aware of and guised as something benign." Shadows voice was low as he leaned forward on the table, the flickering candle in the center illuminating his face. "This place may be a haven to those who would oppose the Fair Kings return, and we would do good to stay out of such squabbles for a time. You have much training ahead of you."

The coyote nods, entirely enthralled by the wizards words. They had a sort of power to them, something that made you listen. "Of course." Shadow smiles, and Arke returns the gesture. "Good. We shall tour the area by night, providing we can find a guide, and get the lay of the land." "Why at night?" The wizards smile turned to an almost evil grin. "What fool would be caught out after sunset?"

Fyroh nodded to the other furre who had joined them at the table, to show he'd noticed her, before turning back to Rigor. "Well, we'll all be served after a while, I suppose. I know some of the waitresses and such, I'm a regular here, you see, which is why I'm here tonight. My favourite tavern, you could say." he replied. "Depending on how much time I leave myself, I might end up getting a room 'ere tonight. Young Vlaardi 'ere, he's from this city and he has his own place; but not me. You often let me stay around, don't ya, Vlaardi?" Fyroh said, nudging his friend.

Vlaardi wasn't listening to Fyroh. He was silently eavesdropping on Arke and Shadow; making sure not to look at them as to give the point away, but keeping an ear out for their conversation. "The fair Kings return..." he thought, replaying the conversation in his head. They were probably Freedom members... or perhaps Order, but that was unlikely. Perhaps they were spies?... Either way, it was pointless questioning them. A fight was the last thing he wanted; the truce was there for a reason, to stop the mindless killing... perhaps he should get to know them a little better... they needed a guide, perhaps he could-

"Vlaardi? You there?" Fyroh nudged Vlaardi again; which made Vlaardi jump.
"Ugh, what do you want?" Vlaardi sighed. He'd lost track of what the others were saying now.
Fyroh looked at Vlaardi questioningly, before shaking his head. "... Nevermind. What are your names, anyway?" he asked the two who'd joined him at the table. "Just so you know, I'm Fyroh, and that's Vlaardi, as you probably know by now."
Vlaardi nodded; it looked almost like a bow, rather than a nod.

The assassin slipped through the city in the night unnoticed for his deeds earlier. He smiled to himself having accomplished his goal. "This is getting to be quite lucrative." he said softly to himself patting his coin purse. He sighed when he realized he had forgotten to clean his claw of blood. A bird landed on a ledge above and looked at him as if baring witness to a murderer. The reptile paid little attention and made his way into the streets, making his way torwards the local inn. There he knew no judgement would be passed and neutrality was the native language.

He barged in the front door and made his way to the counter, eyeing those at the table as he passed. Only the keeper gave him any sign of interest as most were accustomed to his sight. The various patrons milling about the room acted as if nothing was out of the ordinary as he rested his bloodied claw upon the counter. "I need a room, no questions asked and no interuptions" he said in a cold tone as he poured out a few coins on the table. "A fare offering indeed as opposed to the cost of betrayal" He made no effort to conceal what his threat meant. The keeper only nodded and handed over a key.

The raptor broke a small smile, he had known the inn keeper for a long time. The idle threats were more of a long running joke between the two then anything but they also served to warn listeners from prying into his business. Before heading up the stairs, he gave a glance at a scythe laying against a chair where several sat and socialized. He was always weary of armed travelers, a once idle person could become a threat at anytime. He noted their scents and appearances and made his way up to his room.

The panther nodded back, watching the dragon with her head tilted slightly. "I'm Nikkoli. I hope I'm not interrupting anything or intruding on you?" She asked, her tail twitching as she continued to watch the dragon.
