How did YOU become furry? =)

Hmm... let me think about that...

Well, when I was about 5, I got a Gameboy Advance for Christmas, and Super Mario Bros. 3 to play with it. I hope I don't need to explain this, but Mario 3 has this power up that gives you raccoon ears and a tail, as well as the famous Tanooki Suit. To me, that game was like magic, and I think that's where my furriness started.
Another game that was a big part of my childhood was Drawn to Life, which had fox-like people called Raposa. I still hold that game high in regard.
I used to have a cat, and my remember my whole life wishing I could be a cat too. I think a bit of my personality is cat-like because of that.
I also used to watch a lot of cartoons, and you know how that works in relation to furriness.

Certainly would explain why I like foxes, cats, and tanukis so much.

I'm always so baffled by the people who think we furries are so strange; clearly they've never watched a cartoon in their lives. Especially older ones are absolutely full of anthropomorphic animals. Having grown up watching many an anthro character's antics on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, it's honestly no surprise to me that I'm a furry when I think about it.

i had a boyfriend about 3 years ago who was into it, and then i met far too many people around the scene to give it up. sorry if my tale has been less than thrilling.

As for me, I can't really remember the moment I became a furry. I grew up with loads of animals
(I was really blessed with animal-loving parents) and I'd rather spend my afternoons trying to communicate
with my cats and dogs rather than trying to mingle with kids my age. I did have alot of friends though, but
I never felt quite at ease with them as I did with animals.

As years flew by I came in contact with the site Neopets, that was somewhat a revelation since I had never
been in contact with anything specific anthropomorphic. It was not that I really was interested in playing the
games on the site, but it was an outlet for my artistic brain, I had a reason to draw these feelings that had
always been locked inside me.  I ended up 'playing' on and off for more than 12 years, and as of now I stopped
because of life (and because of re-occuring health issues), I just don't have the time left to be dedicated to
a site that has changed for the bad, even though it ment leaving a important part of my life behind and a few
friends along with it.

I can remember seeing furries on fantasy fairs, feeling envious as they skipped on by, wishing I could hop along
with them. And a little while ago I just said  'Why not?'.   So here I am.. Pouring my heart out to you guys. c:

I've always been a furry, it's my nature  when I was a toddler I was dressing up in animal costumes trying to be an animal of some sort ~ I was wearing a cat tail around for quite some time, and always wished I could morph into an animal.
then some beach comes and calls me a furfag because I was worshipping Wilfre, an anthropomorphic video game character WHO SHOOTS RAINBOWS FROM A STAFF COME ON PEOPLE
so for a little while I was trying to impress her by writing angry journals ... HA LOOK AT MY FREE THINKING YOU LITTLE SHEET TROLL
and yeah, I discovered furries, and settled right in.
I'm still ashamed of what I did tho ...

It actually started when I first played Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when I was 5, I would always pick tails. Then there came other games later in my life like Starfox 64, Super Smash Bros., Bloody Trapland, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, etc. My dream came true when I started playing Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2, but I felt really out of place until I discovered furries on DeviantART. That led me to FurAffinity, then here.

When I was little, like ages 3-6 little, I used to act JUST like a dog around the house. I would go on all fours, bark, growl, etc. Then I stopped for a while, but I've always loved animals and felt a connection with them. I found the random via Internet, and I was like, "HEY, I DO THAT'" So now I'm a proud furry.

I don't really know. When I was in second grade I used to act like a dog and draw dogs (as best as I could) but I discovered furry art only a few days ago, and now I guess I'm a furry. It's weird though I feel like I will never tell anyone, even my girlfriend.

How did I become a furry? The Internet.
I was 13 at the time, and in second year at school. To cut a long, boring story short, I took really sick. I missed a lot of school. My mother was often at work and my dad doesn't live with us, so I was alone a lot of the time. I didn't mind it! But what does a kid do when he's alone so much? I had an iPod touch. I often used it to look at art, comics and other such things online. I started to really get in to some of the comics I found on various sites, and they eventually lead me back to this other website. What I found on that, was my first real furry webcomic. The site had a forum which I ended up joining to see all of the content. Since I was sick and bored a lot, I just lurked, but there were a lot of fanfics on the site. I read through all of them, and there was a lot to read. Even days I was back at school I would save big chunks of fics to my notes to read when I could. After a while I grew bolder, started commenting on the fics. Pming other members of the site. I eventually got around to writing my own fic.
I was young, it wasn't great at all, but it was okay. The main character was an anthro wolf, I loved wolves! I stuck to the site and met some cool people. But some of the people on the site were also involved in RPs! It seemed like an interesting way to pass the time, I often just sat and read RP posts on the site. It took me a long time to decide to join in.
I'm never entirely sure why I chose a rabbit back then. I guess it was normal enough but not to common, not a wolf, fox, cat or dog. They were cute, and I used to be a real shy, submissive character. Very introverted. Of course, I'm not any more!
Through the RPing I discovered a lot about myself. I met really interesting people, got caught up in loads of furry drama, had a lot of fun and most of all, was really able to tackle some self-confidence issues and other rubbish I had floating around at the time. I met a lot of supportive people who years on are still a huge part of my life.

It's been a long time since I've been on a forum. My first closed a long time ago. But recently I thought, why not. Here's hoping I don't just abandon this after a week or so!

How did I become a furry? Great question.


To make a somewhat long story short and filled with a lot less whining and complaining, I'll tell it like this. I've been very interested in it since childhood really. I didn't officially know what it was until middle school, about seven years back. I have certain anxieties about losing friends, and the such, so I completely repressed these interests. Saying I would never be a furry, and I was completely normal. Silly, right? Anyways, this continued all throughout high school. Now that I am out of high school, and I no longer have any actual irl friends except for the one guy I've known since freshman year, I've started to slowly realize how much I think this fandom is the coolest freakin' thing ever.


However I still have nobody in this town to share it with. /end whining

When I was younger I was interested in becoming a puppy, dogs were my favorite animal growing up, then I became interested in wolves, I always wondered what it would be like to be an animal, then when I was older I loved Werewolves,it has something to do about they're transformation, the way they turn from man to beast, I believed in werewolves and wanted to become one so badly, this was how I learned about furries (well, sort of), even back then I thought they were all just peverted sexual drawings and fedishes, later on (while I was still interested in werewolves), I saw a video about what furries really are, and I thought about joining them, later I thought about it and accepted, I feel like I really belong in the furry community, in fact I dare say, I felt like it my whole life. My friends don't know it (though one of them suspects it), they still think furries are peverted. And that's how I became a furry (probably because of my fascination with animals lead to my interest in werewolves and ultimately my fursona)
