I always love seeing this topic!
For my own story -
I was always interested in cartoons, books and the like with anthro characters. I grew up in the 80's and the early 90's, where there were a lot of cartoons that featured them.
I used to draw all the time (seriously - at one point my parents ran out of paper in the house because my sister and I drew so much!) and I taught myself to draw anthro characters.
My friends at the time and I used to play pretend with such characters, but as we drifted into different things, I lost touch with them, and as you do, hid my hobbies and interests for the most part as I got older.
When I was at college around 97-98 (ish, it was a while ago; I don't remember properly now!) I had access to the 'net at college, and found out about the whole 'furry thing', and that it existed.
It wasn't until my family got the 'net at home around 99ish that I found there was a UK fur scene, and got involved by going to London meets, which were local to me, living in Reading. I've been involved in the fandom on and off since then, with money being my main inhibiting factor in getting more involved by going to things like big conventions and such.
I keep my hand (paw?) in by roleplaying and writing, and occasionally going to local meets when they're on, and my own schedule doesn't clash.
