Donating Blood
« on: December 28, 2008, 06:39:42 PM »
You know, every time I hear of a blood drive I have to go.  Despite a couple horror stories of my own, I still go.
How many of you do your part and donate a bit of blood when you can ?

I can't donate blood, and if i could, it you would have to drag me and knock me out. I have Trypanophobia (fear of needles)

From Wikipedia

Quote
Trypanophobia is the extreme and irrational fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles. It is occasionally referred to as aichmophobia, belonephobia, or enetophobia, names that are technically incorrect because they simply denote a “fear of pins/needles” and do not refer to the medical aspect of trypanophobia. The name that is in common usage is simply needle phobia.

I would like to, but due to having lived overseas for more than 6 months and also having been born overseas, I cannot donate. I have a fear of needles also, but I was willing to go through wth it at one time due to my grandfather being in the hospital (if you donate blood in the name for someone, it can contribute to help them bill-wise or given to them if it is a match).

My grandfather has passed on, but I thought this information would prove useful. And no matter the horror story, you can make a difference.

I hate needles, but I still donate.  Most of mine goes directly over to my brothers and sisters in Iraq and Afghanistan.  They are the reason I donate.  It helps that I have O POS, the universal blood type.

In the US it's 18.  The same applies to most other places, as well.

I've had to give IVs in the desert sand.  Those were sterile enough.  They go through even greater lengths for blood donations.  Besides, if it can help save even one life, I think it is well worth the momentary discomfort and overcoming my personal fear of sharp and pointy objects.
